Border violence spills onto Mexican ranches, farms
By CHRISTOPHER SHERMAN (AP) – Jul 7, 2010

LAREDO, Texas — Drug violence along the U.S.-Mexico border is spilling into the region's agriculture, threatening the safety of ranchers and farmers and slowing down what was expected to be the best harvest in years.

Ranchers now have trouble getting their animals to market. Farmers who once toiled long hours in the fields fear being attacked in the dark. Some are even being forced to pay protection money to keep from being kidnapped or having their harvest stolen.

In late 2007, the Mexican military tried to curb violence by entering urban areas along the eastern end of the border, an area prized by drug traffickers for its valuable smuggling routes.

The stepped-up military presence pushed more traffickers onto ranches and farms. In February, the fighting intensified after two allied gangs split and went to war with each other.

In what officials caution is now a dangerous and even deadly crime wave, Phoenix, Arizona has become the kidnapping capital of America, with more incidents than any other city in the world outside of Mexico City and over 370 cases last year alone. But local authorities say Washington, DC is too obsessed with al Qaeda terrorists to care about what is happening in their own backyard right now.

AP, ABC News, and oh, Rachel's own network are right wing "news" sources?!?!?!?

I don't know anything about hospitals, but I do know that you fail to see the facts and search them out on your own. As I noted main stream news organizations such as ABC, AP, etc. all contradict Rachel's assertions. You can believe someone's misplaced interpretation of the news story or the news story itself.

Listen up idiot....she was refering to one particulr story..not every story...and the best way to stop that violence is to either stop the never endding US demand for drugs or legalize the drugs.

Appareantly you didn't watch the whole clip. She referred to a few stories/assertions. This isn't about how to stop the violence this is about Rachel lying about others being liars. The title of her segment was "scaring white people for fun and profit." She went on to basically say the stories are bogus. Major news outlets, including her own, refute her assertion. I see you are one of her flock and refuse to check her supposed "facts."

Capt. Obvious you've been duped.

You better check the actual sources.

Like Rachel's own network?

Are you referring to the story you posted a link to that is from January of 2008? The Bush years?

I am referring to any story from 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010 that directly refutes Rachel's bogus analysis. They all prove she is barking up the wrong tree. Being part of her flock, I wouldn't expect you to comprhend logic though.

And by the way, that story confirms what Rachel's is quoting -

"But police soon realize her family is holding something back and isn't fully cooperating with them. Later, investigators find out that relatives have arranged the woman's release on their own. And they discover that members of the family are heavy into marijuana trafficking."

Why am I not surprised?

Great, she got one tiny morsel correct out of a whole segment. Yay for Rachel. Now, if she could get 99% of the rest of the facts straight, she might be a credible source.

"On her MSNBC show last year, the left-wing Air America host Rachel Maddow took a swipe at the conservative Shirley & Banister Public Affairs firm, specifically President and CEO Craig Shirley. Maddow accused Shirley of being behind a grassroots Web site funded by the group Grassfire.org, based on a research provided by the “independent watchdog group Public Citizen,” and she showed still images from an incendiary “Obama=Hitler” video that’s posted on the Grassfire’s ResistNet.com Web site.
But Maddow was wrong. The Public Citizen web page she cited is several years old. Shirley & Banister hasn’t represented Grassfire.org since 2004. And Diana Banister, a partner and Vice President at Shirley & Banister, told NewsBusters that Maddow’s false report has led to hate mail and even death threats to the public relations firm."

Phoenix is not the "kidnapping capital." That claim has already been debunked.

Apparently MSNBC, ABC News, etc. didn't get the memo. So, who is to blame for the propulgation of this "myth" (if it is in fact a myth)? The media? The people that rely on them to be accurate?
