I don’t understand why anyone would have Verizon wireless

Great service but overpriced. You can get at least somewhat comparable service for cheaper with AT&T or T mobile.

We have 2 Verizon phones. They work great and only cost 82 dollars a month for both phones.

That's why Verizon sucks. It's not the service that sucks, it's the $82 a month + $23 in BS service fees they automatically tack on to your monthly bill that sucks.

Verizon is popular since it provides wireless service to more cities than any other carrier. Also, the coverage is really good. So, there is no surprise people choose it. I also checked the Verizon reviews here https://verizon.pissedconsumer.com/review.html and noted that people like it, a lot of them have been using this service for years without any issues.

I've used both Verizon and AT&T in NOVA, and I've found that Verizon's overall quality was vastly better.
