They were not 'FREE'. They were purchased from the tribes that captured them. The same African tribesmen who acted as pirates might and burned their victims villages to the ground, raped/ and or killed their women, using the weak and undesirable male specimens as barganing chips if you will, with other tribes and the Europeans and others that landed on their shores. Essentially a profitable bi-product of their 'culture' or way of life. This still goes on TODAY.
