Backing into parking spaces
Posted by: jjoe ()

Why do so many people around here back into parking spaces? It takes longer than parking head on and it is incredibly annoying to everyone else in the parking lot. What is the point? Backing out is easier than backing in. Why not just back out of your space? Seriously. Why do so many people around here do this? I've seen so many close calls due to backing into spaces (i.e. hitting pedestrians, backing into other cars). If you do it, please consider parking like most of the population. It's better for everyone involved.

Actually it is a documented fact that backing out of parking spaces to leave causes more crashes than backing into one.

It used to annoy me but then I did it a few times and it's kind of nice to pull out of a spot front-ways. I don't do it all the time, usually only when I park in front of my house though, so it's not like I'm doing it at the mall. I do find I usually look for pull-through spots when I can.

If it is a tight parking spot, it is actually easier to back into the space than to pull in forward.

Why would you care? What time you lose by backing in, you get back by driving out forward.

I back in because there's less danger involved after a hummer and monster truck have parked on either side of my car obstructing the view of parentless hooligans running through the parking lot and speed demons who need to drive 50mph through the parking lot.

If the situation goes South in a hurry and you gotta go, you don't wanna have to fuck around with backin' out of a spot or a 4 point turn. I'll be in my car and GONE while your ass is potentially getting shot off!

OP probably thinks that it's probably too "blue collar" for upscale Fairfax Co.

Now, if some soccer mom is attempting to back her minivan it, yes, it will probably take 20 minutes. And if it's on a slope I guarantee she won't put her parking brake on, thereby destroying her transmission.

I'm a great parker and I am quick. (remember the knob on my wheel?;)

I have my system. First I look for the dream spot right in front of the door, then I slowly expand out in concentric circles.

How I wish you could make a living parallel parking. It's all geometry, knowing all the angles, when to make that first turn and then when to swing it back in, that's the key.

There's nothing I can even impart to you, that's the sad thing. It's so inborn, I can't pass it on.

My truck's turning radius is shit, so it's more effort to swing wide and drive in than it is to pull a little past, cut the wheel, and back in. I always, always use a turn signal, but there are so many ass clowns out there that pull right up on my bumper and make it harder. Or they try and pass while i'm backing in!! Dipshits.

I'll back into a spot if I go to bar and I'm going to have a couple of beers or if I think there will be a lot traffic in the lot when I'm leaving. Like at a concert or sporting event.

Other than that I don't see much difference between backing in or backing out.

This reminds me of an experience when we were visiting the Arenal volcano in Costa Rica a few years ago. We pulled into the parking space and a security guard quickly ran up to our car pointing at a sign and signaling us to do something. Not speaking much Spanish I asked our daughter to find out what was up. She came back a few minutes later, slightly shaken from being told that we need to back into the parking space in case the volcano erupts so that we can make a quick escape.

when you back into a space you are only contending with stationary objects (the parked cars around you, garage wall) and pulling out front first you have better visibility.

whereas if you have to back out of a space, there are other cars coming by, people walking, careless children or a dog could run behind you, moving shopping carts etc. combined with the reduced visibility of driving backwards, esp. if your car has bad blind spots. significantly more chance for an accident -- (I learned this the hard way years ago when a van came whizzing by as I backed out and the corner of my bumper ripped up the whole side of the van, nevertheless it was my fault for not yielding the right of way)

also, if you're in a poorly lit garage, or if you need to check something under the hood or if your battery goes dead and you need a jump, you're in better position facing out.

and if you have a sporty car or some riced-out hoopty that's low to the ground, then your front bumper might not clear the curb so you're better off backing in.

of course if you're loading groceries or whatever then do what makes sense.

I have a better question. Why do dipshits back into spots that have no cars on either side of a row of parking spots? I see this all the time in practically empty parking lots. Why not drive straight through the spot into the one on the opposite side so you will be able to drive straight out later in the day?

Because of dipshits who drive 30mph into a parking spot and will smash them head on

Not the case. I see people do this in empty parking lots. I guess it's habit, but it seems pretty stupid.

Cops, criminals, emergency workers, and military are trained to back in.

Plus, if you've ever driven a forklift, you know that rear wheel steering is infinitely more maneuverable, i.e., easier to back into and pull out.

I hope you are not one of the "Dipshits" that takes up 2 parking spaces in a crowded area cuz they are afraid someone will ding you. God those people piss me off.

I back in sometimes, if I am not in a hurry. The main reason, which only a few of you mentioned, is the blind spots of backup up. People are in and out of stores, and go speeding away at 30 MPH through them. Even if you nudge your way out it's hard to see if you're between two soccer moms.

What I hate it (just happens to be black people that always do it) when someone is front of you and the prick makes you back up so they have enough space to reverse park. Then they aren't skilled enough to do it on the first try, so they switch back to Drive, then reverse again.

Seriously, black people don't give a fuck about being polite sometimes. The whole "Imma do me" attitude.

You sound like the type of asshole who pulls up on peoples bumpers as they maneuver to park, and your impatient ass does everything possibly to nudge by them with less than an inch to spare.

I don't blame people for double parking anymore, because more dipshits need to be considerate enough to stop denting and scraping other peoples property.

Shit, dents and scrapes??? Accidents happen, that's why I roll my window down if I'm in the car and say "thank you" to the person. Usually they are full of appologies, so I just tell them "don't worry about that door ding, I like it. It gives me something to remember you by."

Most of the time I back in because when I'm leaving, It easier to just pull out quickly. I'm more in a hurry to get home or leave then to arrive. Example of an appointment, I arrive earlier so I have time to back-in. Lots of people are ususally late to appointments so they pull in. My 2 cents

I use the handicapped parking spaces. I have a counterfeit placard. I just pull in and get out. If someone is watching me I use my pretend limp. If it is a quick stop I have to remember to limp on my return. I have a cane I also use in case a cop stops me. I was stopped once and asked by a cop and questioned, I pointed to my cane in the back seat and told him “I’m on my way to pick up a young lady for our first date and didn’t want her to see my cane” he told me “good luck buddy”. It is super easy to get in and out of places now and with so many fakers out there using real handicapped placards it’s like car alarms, nobody seems to care. To answer the question I pull in to most handicapped spaces.

If I took two spaces, I wouldn't need to park beside columns or curbs. I'm not afraid of dings, but I don't like having to struggle to get in my car because some asshole parked right up against me.

I took my in-laws out to eat last night. Had to park near the rear of the parking lot. When leaving, I had to wait for a guy in a BMW that was blocking the road as he attempted to back into a spot again and again and again.

If you can back in one shot... cool. Otherwise, be considerate of others that may be waiting and waiting and waiting on your remedial parking skills.

The reason, quite frankly, is that it makes them feel like "men".
You'll hardly ever see a woman backing into a spot -- it's a "man
thing", like motorcycling, ricing, using oversized wheels, manual
transmissions, etc. All of these things make men feel manly.

It's hilarious to watch how much effort some people will put into
backing into a spot. In most cases it takes 5-10x the amount of time
it would have taken to pull in forward.

The "safest practice" idea is nonsense. Any idiot can back out of a
spot slowly and methodologically to avoid an accident. Sure, a lot of
people back out too quickly, but that's another issue.

I back into a parking space if it's behind me. Like a car pulled out after I already passed it.

Once a driver knows how to use their 3 rear view mirros - backing in any where is easy. So lets put aside "Oh, I've seen many near-hits with people backing in" issue.
Now - the scope of area needed to be concerned with while backing "in" a parking space (the parking space itself) is much smaller and much possesses much less accident potential than backing "out" into the flow of traffic. In addition, the scope of sight where your car has to go while backing out of a parking space is compremised. While backing out you cannot see crossing traffic until you are honked at.
Now to the person who said it taked too long to wait for a person to back IN to a parking space? Well my friend you will wait LONGER for a person to back OUT of a parking space.
What humors me is when I see a driver pull into a parking space and stop when the parkin space directly in font of that driver is empty. All that driver would have to do is full the car THROUGH right into the empty space so theyr car is pointing out and when leaving they just drive forward and out. But no! They stop in the first space.Another car parks in front of that first space so that driver now ha to BACK out and puss that driver who hates to wait for parkers off!!!

I've noticed this a lot lately, and it's really starting to piss me off! It seems the only reasons could be that they are too incredibly stupid to know how annoying it is to everyone around them; or that they just WANT to be annoying! Maybe they like to use what little they can do to show they have any power!

I do not understand this - why is the position a car is parked in a space annoying to anyone?

======

I almost always try to park "facing out" from the space I'm going to be parking, though this often means driving through the space "behind" the one I'm in to face outwards rather than backing into the space to face outwards.

Costco's parking spaces are usually the exception to this since I often have a large load of stuff to put into the car and the trunk/lift needs access from the rear.

I back into spots because I know it annoys some people.

As others have said, it is far easier for me to back in then to pull into a parking space unless it can be pulled all the way thru so the nose of the vehichle is facing out. It took a long time and a F250 extended cab, long bed truck to teach me the value of backing into a parking place. They back in much easier than backing out, especially if vehicles next you have changed and narrowed the space. The one thing that drives me crazy around here is the parking spaces and rows have gotten smaller. It is difficult and dangerous in some parking lots if you are not driving a compact car.

Truth: Trucks should be backed in.
Lies: Parking spaces have gotten smaller (Its just that the cars have gotten bigger)

Most cars today are smaller than the boats that I learned to drive on.

^^ This is true enough, some of those land yachts from back in the day were huge. But overall, Id have to take a guess that over the last 20 years, in this area specifically, that the over-abundance of gargantuan sized SUVs tips our scales.

I was behind this HUGE pickup pulling into the gym and the driver went to back in. I looked and it was a girl. I thought to myself "fuck, she'll never get this". Low and behold, slid it right in. And she was pretty cute.

That's dating material right there.

Backing into a parking space seems to be some weird NoVA cultural thing.

A few years ago some douche almost got into a fist fight with me because he pulled nose-first into a parking space (I was right behind him), and then preceded to put it in reverse and drive straight backwards across the road so that he could back into spot immediately across. I didn't expect that move (I figured he was done parking when he turned left and nosed in) and had to gun it, spinning my tires in the process, so that I could get out of the way of the car backing towards me.

Apparently spinning my tires and revving my engine to get out of his way insulted his manhood, so he then preceded to get out of his car and start screaming at me.

Either way, I equate backing in with douchebaggery. Anyway, backing out of spot is easier (one-to-many) than backing into a space (many-to-one).

Absolutely concur.

9 times out of 10, a person backing into a spot is doing it for no other reason than to be "manly". They spend more time backing in than it would take them to back out. Pretty comical.

I back in or I pull through.I drive a pick up and it is easier to back in than pull in frontwards.I dunno why this is so,it just is.I almost never take more then one shot at parking.I get it right the first time.

The turning radius is smaller when backing into a space rather than pulling forward for some vehicles.

The same morons that will walk behind a car backing into a spot will walk behind a car backing out of a spot - that's the source of your 'near misses'. These are the same people that push a yellow light instead of waiting and drive into a clogged intersection without being able to get through before the light turns. I wish we had $500 fines for that like they do in NYC.
