That's just wrong. Istanbul is in Europe. The rest of Turkey is in what was traditionally known as Asia Minor. It's your western point of view that makes you think people are driven to identify as European. For much of Anatolia's long history, Europe was a savage backwater by their standards. Some of the oldest civilizations ever found are in the Anatolian peninsula. They were building cities while Europe was still in the stone age.
