Personal Protective Orders per the state:
http://www.courts.state.va.us/forms/district/info_sheet_protective_order_stalking.pdf
A permanent protective order is permanent for the specified amount of time allotted by a practicing judge, up to two years.
This means a permanent protective order can be issued for any amount of time with a maximum of two years.
An emergency protective order is 72 hours.
A preliminary protective order is 15 days.
Those are set amounts of time for those two. No change can be made to that.

In order to obtain a permanent protective order, the burden of proof falls upon the petitioner (the person requesting the PPO) to prove that there has been an act or threat of violence either to their person or their property. If there is not sufficient evidence (this evidence does not have to be proven beyond a reasonable doubt) then the order is denied.
