5, Coast Guard
6, 1000 dollars a suitcase full of clothes and get the fuck out!

Let me guess Jason. You have been fucking up and causing your Dad trouble for years. Your Dad loves you but he is tired of your bullshit. Once you turn 18 you are not his problem anymore. Join the Army and try to learn a trade like electrical HVAC or plumbing. If you get skills in those areas you will likely have no trouble supporting yourself for the rest of your life. The reserve component is just as good if not better. I has all the benefits and none of the downside, and you can simultaneously have a civilian career.
For that matter IIRC you can do ROTC in grad school and get a commission that way.

Never understood why some people, especially in the states are so eager to give their kids the boot out the house as soon as they’re 18. That is a poor person mindset. If I had to choose one of these, I’d do college first and get a degree. If you still want to do military after that, you can sign up as an officer.

Sure. But if you actually want to work for a living being enlisted is much better than being an officer. You actually get to do a job. Warrants are great. But I never met an officer I had any respect for. Paper pushing assholes with power trips. I had my degree and enlisted. I was more educated than many of the officers I served under.

If you want to go to college there is so much free money, but you have to get off your lazy ass and go look it up. There are so many scholarships for every type of person. Rich people set up all sorts of weird things e.g. $10,000 a year paid to real college for anyone who is 1/2 Irish, wears glasses, from a broken home, went to a particular highschool and will major in business.
To to student aid and ask for the book of weird college scholarships. Spend hours looking for what you need. THEY DO NOT ADVERTISE IT.
But son, college is waste of 4 years. If you do not know what to do, take the $1000 from your dad and buy the beginner tools needed to become a apprentice electrician. Go to the local union hall/place and ask what you need to do to sign up. THEN work hard, keep your mouth shut, get coffee/donuts/fetch and LEARN. Show up early SHUT UP AND WORK HARD, stay late.
Put in your time and in 4 years you will be on your way to having a life long skill. After 10 years you will be master electrician WHICH WILL ALWAYS BE IN DEMAND! No matter what else, the world runs on electricity and it breaks and needs repaired.
Even if you change you mind at age 30 and want to do something else, you will ALWAYS have a side gig which pays $500/hour on weekends when people need to get this power repaired and turned back on.
OR stick with it.... start you own company, hire and train apprentices and do major construction project.
Build your good rep. Dont be a drunk or drug addict. Make contacts. Read books on how to be successful.
Life is pretty easy if you do not waste all your time whining and blaming others because you did not win the lottery.

If he joins the AF Reserve or National Guard he will get paid to receive free training in any number of marketable fields of his choice. He could also get free tuition and probably a commission when he graduates. He will have a steady part-time or full-time job while in school and afterwards, and probably a security clearance that would make him very marketable to thousands of civilian employers. The Coast Guard Reserve and AF Reserve are also good deals. Avoid the Army at all costs, and avoid the "security forces" career field in the AF.

It’s not at all foolish to live with your folks until you’ve got the means to strike out on your own. I didn’t move out until I was 24 and stacked enoucash to buy my own place straight up. I saved a ton of money and I’m not a slave to a bank for a 30 year mortgage

Why is it so important that they leave the home? You assume that anyone staying with their parents is only doing it because they don’t have the means to take care of themselves. My cousin in Italy is a banker. He makes more in a year than anyone on this board makes, is in his 40s and still lives with my aunt & uncle. He isn’t Doing it cause he’s broke. He does it because one day, his parents will be gone and he wants to spend as much time as he can with them. This is a pretty common practice outside the Anglo Saxon world.

I make enough to move out, but I’m saving up to buy my own place straight up. I just can’t stomach the idea of paying some asshole landlord rent when I can just save it for my own house.

A lot of assumptions being made on your part. What if he does work in “IT” and makes enough for a down payment. What if it doesn’t Matt whether he lives with his parents, lives in some rathole in fairfax or lives in his own house? So, what did you choose? :DDD I was in a similar situation; however, it was not all related to army and all that kind of stuff :D. My dad insisted that I have to become an electrician or a plumber. Well, you know what I have chosen?! :D The 1000 dollars a suitcase full of clothes and get the fuck out! While my brother is a very great Level 2 Electrician Chatswood https right now. He has studied as an electrician and started to work as an electrician immediately after he graduated from college.
