Diana was not in the line of succession, the queen wasn't even going to have a state funeral until public outcry demanded it

No but she was *close* to it, in that her sons are in the line.
And I don't buy the implication that this was in any way a hit, and not just a stupid accident. I've driven that route in Paris and it's a death trap at speed, particularly if you're drunk.
