Could HAVE

Does this drive anyone else crazy?

No matter how articulate the post, I just stop reading if I run across "could of".

Well when you say "Could've" it sounds just like you are saying "could of". I guess that's why some people write it that way.

I want to smack people that say they "changed out" some car part or another. For example: I "changed out" the water pump.

No asshole, you REPLACED the water pump.

You guys just don't understand...
Quote

You are sad." the Knight said in an anxious tone: "let me sing you a song to comfort you."

"Is it very long?" Alice asked, for she had heard a good deal of poetry that day.

"It's long." said the Knight, "but it's very, very beautiful. Everybody that hears me sing it -
either it brings tears to their eyes, or else -"

"Or else what?" said Alice, for the Knight had made a sudden pause.

"Or else it doesn't, you know. The name of the song is called 'Haddocks' Eyes.'"

"Oh, that's the name of the song, is it?" Alice said, trying to feel interested.

"No, you don't understand," the Knight said, looking a little vexed. "That's what the name
is called. The name really is 'The Aged, Aged Man.'"

"Then I ought to have said 'That's what the song is called'?" Alice corrected herself.

"No you oughtn't: that's another thing. The song is called 'Ways and Means' but that's only
what it's called, you know!"

"Well, what is the song then?" said Alice, who was by this time completely bewildered.

"I was coming to that," the Knight said. "The song really is 'A-sitting On a Gate': and the
tune's my own invention."

So saying, he stopped his horse and let the reins fall on its neck: then slowly beating time
with one hand, and with a faint smile lighting up his gentle, foolish face, he began

I also hate the word "bro." Bro-ham is fine, though. I mean, until I hear that way too much.

How about when people start a comment with - "Not for nothin', but..."
I understand some of these "sayings" are specific to some areas. Like "I know, right?". I think that's a New York, New Jersey thing. And I say that sometimes.
It makes way more sense to me than "Not for nothin', but.." which I think is also
a northeast thing.

I'm just sayin'

Maaaybe....they arose from translations from Italian, Greek... Bad translations.

Eh, I dunno. I think regional colloquialisms (sp?) are all right, even kinda funny. Like where I grew up, people would say.."Hey, wait just a cotton-pickin minute...."...seemed normal then, now I laugh every time I hear it.

I've always had problems with "All but..."

Like "The city was all but destroyed"....

It seems like it should make sense but, when I hear an example of it, I get all but confused?

Another annoyance which I am now hearing often, especially in movies, is when someone says: "These ones". What a God awful example of spoken English.

Not for nothin', Conie, and I swear on my father's grave that I could care less, but I literally fell off my freakin' chair. Its not to often that I hear that expression down here.

This begs the question... do you know any yoots from Brooklyn or Queens?
