Playing the don't pass is just evil, bro.

Just play pass and take full odds.

and FWIW, 496, you're staying near Casino Royale, it's a total dive, but they usually have 5 dollar craps with 100x odds- only place you'll find that on the Strip, or in all of Vegas probably. Go take advantage!

I have to agree with that. Plus when I win I have to keep my mouth shut and pull in the winnings without being too obvious.

I try to stand near the end out of the way and just drop my odds on the dont come bets. The dealers know what I want and they also keep quiet.

A shameful way to make a buck you are right. I once saw another guy betting the dont and he left his hands over rail and the dice hit them and came up 7. I thought the high rollers were going to have him killed.

I was playing at the Harrah's in Cherokee last night (im actually at the airport right now as I type this)... they have an electronic craps table. No stick, no dice, no felt- just video terminals! I thought the 2 dollar minimum would be fun (compared to playing slots) so I played for awhile. What a joke. The game moves slowly, and the payoffs on odds bets are ridiculously unfair- no more 2 to 1 on a 4 or 10, it was some absurd payoff like 11-7.

Hopefully this is not a sign of the future!

Man, I haven't been out there in years. It's a fun place. The first year I went, it was Summer, and we stayed at a joint down the street where MIL families live (I wasn't old enough to gamble then, or on my second visit either). The second and third times we stayed there at Thanksgiving and Christmas, and we were in the Mandalay Bay, and then the Luxor. The MB has the BEST views from those huge windows up on the tower, while the Luxor is the most fun (There is so much to do within the hotel itself, and our room was on the third floor right next to the Sphinx).

I used to have connected fam out there, but no longer. Too bad, but it's still a fun place. For fine ladies, check out the Tropicana ;-)

Whatever fun the Luxor used to have with the mighty Egyptian-theme has been supplanted. Nowadays it's filled, and I mean FILLED, with Cris Angel and Carrot Top propaganda. I think they finally realized that the pyramid stuff doesn't attract new guests. Evidently huge pictures of Carrot Top and Cris Angel do.

I don't like those south Strip places, but yeah, the views from Mandalay Bay are top-notch. Hopefully you can go up and take a peek without paying for a room. :)

What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas.

Well except the AIDS, crabs, chlamydia, genital warts, herpes, gonorrhea, hepatitis and syphilis. The nice part is those are free in Vegas.

we spent 90% of our time by the pool drinking margaritas or eating at various restaurants. Hardly gambled at all. The north end of the strip is downright scary these days. Went to Bellagio, Ceasars, at the the Rio buffet on a recommendation and it was stellar. Too many crablegs to count.

I stayed at the Stratosphere about 10 years ago, it's always been sort of a no-man's-land up there. Anything north of the Wynn/Encore properties and there's a definite depressing/creepiness factor, especially if you're walking around after dark.

Yeah, getting up to the top was a gauntlet of tattoo parlors, tacky t-shirt vendors and pizza by the slice. Once up there our table wasn;t ready so went out to the observation deck where near gale force winds were blowing.

Whoa, you actually ate up there? That's like one of the fanciest places in all of Vegas. Very nice.

When I stayed there (which I do not recommend), my limited budget had me walking down to that scary litte Aztec Casino for the $5.99 steak and spaghetti meal. Six bucks for a steak, spaghetti, and just about all the desperation and gloom a person can handle.

BTW, I heard the Strat has some new ride that lets you jump off the side and glide 800 feet to the bottom. Did you go on that?

That Fremont Street Experience thing looks pretty cool. Not sure I would stay up in that area, though.

My problem with Vegas these days is that there is so much development around Caesar's and Bellagio that you almost can't walk around. It's just exploded.

It's actually the best place to stay if you're there to party it up for a few days. It's alot seedier than the Strip but you can get incredible hotel deals downtown, and better gaming. It's not the place to go if you're looking to be pampered in a fancy, themed resort. But if you're looking to stretch your budget and don't mind the grime and all the lunatics who hang out there, it's the place to be.

I've taken my family there, but just because you have some fountains and roller coasters doesn't mean the main appeal of the town is "family fun." The appeal is vice. Gambling and sex and booze. The Mormons in Nevada must have gotten control of the Tourism board for a while when there were pumping out all of that family fun nonsense.

I heard the old down town casinos cut that idea off as soon as it was proposed. I had heard that none of the old town section ever bought into that promotion. It was business as usual at Binions.

I don't really like the new trend that's been happening out there over the past 10-15 years: casinos becoming high-end luxury shopping destinations. It's like every strip property nowadays has it's own version of Tysons Galleria inside it. I walk by these places and wonder if the stores even make enough money to justify their existence.

Do people playing blackjack for a few hours and get up and say "Geee, I think I might need to stop in Banana Republic and by a nice shirt?", or "Give me 5 on the horn high yo, and by the way, what time does Abercrombie and Fitch open?".

I realize casinos are trying to get back some of the cash people are winning, but enough is enough.

I don't think those shops are aimed at the blackjack players. I think Wynn is trying to cater to the Palm Springs/Hamptons rich bitch crowd and they put those stores in there for them. Last time I was out there, the Miracle Mile at Planet Hollywood was filled with 20-something Paris Hilton wannabes. In fact, almost everywhere I went the slot machines were mostly empty and many of the gaming tables had dust jackets on them. Different times in Vegas, that's for sure.

Which brings up another disturbing trend: shitty gaming.

Table minimums on the Strip these days are pretty much 10 dollars everywhere. On weekends, expect mostly 15 or 25 minimums. The only places you'll reliably find 5 dollar tables anymore are Bill's, O Shea's, or Casino Royale.

And thanks to Harrah's, most Strip casinos are now playing the abominable 6/5 blackjack. It's no wonder you see empty tables. If 6/5 ever happened downtown, expect to see riots.

And good luck finding full-pay video poker. It's even hard to find downtown these days, and on the Strip you probably won't find it at all.

I guess they're making enough money at the fancy stores that they can afford to offer unfair odds. I'll be out there next month and plan to spend some time out on Boulder Highway hitting all the locals joints- you won't find stupid gambling rules there. Hopefully more people will start realizing that and go elsewhere.

when did this happen? i found some 5 dollar tables at the bellagio i think MGM had some as well. that was about 2 years ago so im sure things have changed.

i've played a 25 dollar minimum before. i had won a little walking around money before i played so i had some to gamble, i said what the fuck, why not. threw a hundo down actually won a couple hands then lost it all, i should have walked away when i was up. it was fun but i doubt ill play one again. too much money to keep track of and it goes too fast. 5 dollar minimum is my game. if i want to bet big i can or i can play slow for a lot longer. there is no slow play when it is 25 bucks a hand.

Maybe you'll see an odd table drop down to 5 at a place like MGM during the day during the week, but if you're looking for 5 buck tables you'll really have to hunt for them. And on the weekends, forget it.

Ten years ago, it wasn't like that. I mostly play craps, and trying to make odds bets at a 25 dollar table is just out of my low-rolling realm. It sorta freaks me out when I see people putting hundreds of dollars out on the felt.

6/5 blackjack is just greedy. I guess casinos are trying to ride out the recession by screwing over the customers. You would think they would be happy with the fact that most players have no idea what they are doing.

i always keep an eye out for them and i stay away from war tables. i thought that shit was just in the movies but there really was a war table. i've played high card with my friends and im usually pretty lucky but i got my ass kicked when i played in vegas.

yeah that was a one timer for me. i'll have to be pretty drunk and ahead if i do dare to do that again.

i saw a dude throw a thousand bucks on the table. and when the dealer was counting it out verifying that it wasnt counterfeit, i got this strong urge to snatch it and run. it did freak me out though, seeing that amount of money just thrown around isnt healthy.

lol, I saw that happen one night at the 4 Queens. Some drunk guy playing blackjack lunged over the table and grabbed a whole bunch of chips. Needless to say, a security team was there within 10- 15 seconds (those dudes literally come right out of the woodwork). The cool thing I noticed was the dealer, who did not flinch one bit. His eyes stayed right on the other players and their cards the whole time.

Anybody here not a gambler?

So far:

WashingToneLocian

I understand going out to Las Vegas, maybe once, allotting a certain amount of money which I would expect to lose... never going over that amount...having fun and then, going home.
But I can't imagine going back a second time.

Once, while in Reno on a business trip, I "gambled". I allotted myself 200 dollars which I lost in like 10 minutes. I also watched a show featuring topless women with lots of feathers, walking along a runway. That's really all they did.

I still remember the older guy I was traveling with. As the feathered topless women paraded past our table, he started making these little gurgling/smacking sounds.
I was COMPLETELY grossed out!

After you've gone once.... why return?

What's there... except gambling and trashy shows?

Are there some nooks and crannies you missed the first time. Some cool antique shops you just didn't have time to visit. What, exactly do you miss in one visit?

I know some people who go to a cabin up in the Poconos every summer. I think it's sorta boring, but they enjoy it enough to return every year.

Same w/ me and Vegas. It's a mega-resort town abound with opportunities to party or relax. It's awake 24/7, filled with thousands of people out having a good time, and the weather is predictably sunny and hot. It's sort of weird and in-your-face, but I like that. For some people, it's petrifying. But for others, it's a nice place to go to take a break from reality.

I go for pretty much the same reasons as Meeper, the 24 hour lifestyle. In this area on weekdays after 10 everything is closed up.

No matter what time you go to sleep or wake up in Vegas something is always happening. I also like the mystique of it being a city built by gangsters.

That does sound sorta boring.

But, yes, we all have our favorite places....

I am and always have been attracted to lively non-stop action cities that never sleep. I don't mind weird at all, as long as it's not the kind of weird that kills you.

But, primarily aren't you going there to gamble?

I guess I just have a hard time spending money without actually getting something in return.

I've never even bought a lottery ticket. I was thinking of buying one recently, while visiting a local 7/11, but I didn't even know what to ask for and I didn't want to sound like a fagit in front of the 7/11 crowd. Also, I wanted to get in and out there as quickly as possible.

Seriously, what do you ask for? If I say, one lottery ticket please, what will they give me?

LOL.. I guess that's why I like Little Italy. There's always that possibility that someone might get shot up while eating calamari.

Pfft. I was there four times last year. Always did something new..some new show always start up or something new opens. One time I was there when Encore opened. Last time, when Aria opened.

I never go past Aria and never go higher than Encore. Mandalay Bay is a nice hotel, but too far south.

Something about the city makes it kick ass. Probably what others mentioned, here everything closes at 10. There.. no locks on the door. You can wander down from your hotel room at 5am and see a full craps table.

Protip: Fuck 6/5 BJ, fuck mini-baccart, fuck Casino War, and fuck the wheel. Establish yourself with one card (Harrah's, MGM, etc.) and you're golden. I haven't paid for a room yet.

I plan to stop in there next month, it wasn't open yet last time I was out there, and it's the only Strip casino I haven't been in. Gotta keep my streak goin. That whole CityCenter complex looks ridiculous, btw.

Got back late last night. Never made it into Paris to get that pic of your "dream picture". Spent most of my casino-time downtown this trip. Also did some awesome hiking in Red Rock Canyon while I was there and took a trip to the Grand Canyon. Good times. Windy as hell out there this time of year.
