For all those freaking out about the corona virus, let's keep things in perspective

I'm not trying to minimize the impact of the virus and the damage it can do. But we need to compare and contrast it to other pandemics. COVID-19 currently has, at least roughly a 2-3% mortality rate for the general public. Absolute worst case scenario for those in the high risk groups (those over 60, & those with compromised immune systems) it's around 10%. You've still got a 90% mortality rate.
Compare that to the Spanish flu which had a mortality rate of around 4-5% on average, with those most at risk suffering from a 22% mortality rate.
What's more the Black Plague had a mortality rate down the line of anywhere between 50-80%.
If you need more perspective of how worse it could be, check out the movie Contagion. Death rate for MEV-1 is around 30-40%, with about 26 million people dying around the world, including 2 million in the United States.
Surely no one wants to contract it, but it will not be the end of the world. We will survive, and we will move on. Eventually.

The people who are dying would also probably die if they caught a regular flu. We may need to just stay in permanent quarantine or more will die.

Yes, it makes sense to double or triple the amount of people who die every year by accepting a virus that kills the same or more people than the standard flu.

Corona virus was developed and released jointly by the US and China to kill off as many people as possible so Social security payments wouldn't have to be paid out.

Both the Black Plague and the Spanish Influenza fucked up things pretty badly. Virtually everyone had people they loved die off because of them.
Not really a positive comparison at all. Yes, most people will live but there will be a fuck ton of work ahead for the survivors.
It won't be about who is "Right" or "Wrong", it will be about who is "left".
Absolutely no political overtones meant with 'right' or 'left'. Everyone needs to put away the petty partisan bullshit and try to maximize people living through this.

IM in commercial real estate - all business has come to a halt. All pending deals cancelled, and consideration is being given to closing the majority of facilities for most of my clients. I long ago gave up commission work for hourly fees so this doesnt take food from my mouth but plenty of people, businesses and property owners will lose most if not everything if this continues for another 6 months. Gonna be busy in a year and a half but for the next year Ill be negotiating buyouts of leases and strategic defaults.
All this and deaths and overflowing hospitals havent even started yet. Fuck.

It makes more sense to crash the entire global economy so that the .01% oldest and most feeble of us don't die for a few more months.
Better that we all lose our jobs and homes and savings so that Great-Grampa Joe can survive the spring so he can die of heat exhaustion in July instead.

This is not a health crisis. This is a financial crisis. It's deliberate and it's global.

We can accept them or not. Viruses don't care. We can't cure a viral infection. We can treat most symptoms, but there is no cure. Medical mistakes in hospitals kill over 200,000 people a year in this country. I don't see us shutting down the country over that either.
The H2N2 pandemic (aka Asian Flu) of the late 1950's infected an estimated 30 million Americans and killed around 120,000. We kept going about our lives. Businesses stayed open. Sports continued. Schools stayed open. Toughen up America.
