Americans don't have much perspective on issues that need to dealt with vs. issues that don't. They also have no real idea of what war is. Europe does, and as a result, they work together well, and don't waste their time on the shit that we do. Petty social intolerances don't dominate them nearly as much as they do our society. Speak for yourself. The fact that you don't know anyone who's fought or sacrificed doesn't mean the rest of the U.S. public doesn't. And, if the point is that Americans are divorced from the realities of war compared to the Euros, then it's totally off base. Euros haven't done 1/10th of what the Americans have in AFG and Iraq. Comparatively speaking, Americans are much more familiar with war at present than anyone in Europe, with maybe the exception of the Yugoslavs.

Why have Americans become incapable of independent thinking? It's all very black and white in America, there's no gray area: either you're conservative or you're liberal. You're vilified in both situations. The only Americans that really 'master' the art of critical thinking/analysis and independent thinking are the ones that travel to different parts of the world, and see what the world really is, and what a good job our media does in dumbing down the masses. Make no mistake, America is a very stringent 'police' state in every sense of the word.

I don't think it has to do as much with travel as many people think. There's a constant comparison with Europe, where you can drive through 4 countries in 6 hours, whereas it takes a week to drive from one side of America to the other. That's not to say that travel is the issue, just that Europeans have such easy access to other countries and such vastly different cultures that it's a silly conclusion to come to.

I think it has more to do with the way we raise our kids and with the way that society has learned to handle certain trying times in our lives. We went from kids who played in the street until the lights came on, to kids who don't leave their houses except for school. We went from teachers who could substitute for your parents while in class--reasonably--to teachers who are terrified of 7 year olds (I've taught inner-city 4th graders, and I know what they're capable of doing to some people). We went from people minding their own business to people who can't go through a day of their lives without wondering who's judging you, as if their opinion ever mattered. We're convinced that we're all the only important person in our lives, while we scream about altruism and equality and base all decisions on group think. We've bred an heir of entitlement for EVERYONE, not any particular class or income level, but everyone. Instead of stopping it or reversing it, people give up and hop on board...it's easier.

Technology has also added to it in the sense that it's there to make our functioning lives simpler. Dishwashers, the Internet, cars, etc. However, it seems as though that sense of simplicity is spilling over into areas where it never belonged, aka, raising children properly. We don't have neighboring countries (close enough anyways) where bread lines, no electricity and dictatorships are the way of life either. We don't have a neighbor who has communism at it's ugliest, fascism and death camps still fresh in their memory. Even what we know about Mexico normally stops with Cancun and "day laborers".

There are very few people left in this country who went through a dire crisis in America. The Great Depression, World Wars 1 & 2, The Cold War, etc. We've even managed to marginalize our current wars to the point where unless you're in the desert with a gun, it's not relevant to you. I don't know what the answer is, and for all I know, the answer is on the horizon right now.

People are turning though. This place is a terrible benchmark; the Internet as a whole is generally a poor judgment of society since most people don't post or write as themselves, but as their online persona. There's no real truth in a site like this, just people throwing bombs for their own amusement. Our media also has a tendency to focus on the loudest voices, and they're normally the craziest...makes for good TV though, apparently.

I don't knoq where you've been the last 8 years (perhaps musing about the dire state of this country in the safety of your own home), but huge portions of this country have experienced just the type of "dire crisis" you lament we haven't had. May I remind you, 9/11, Afghanistan, Iraq, the Great Recession, are not just imaginary storylines invented by our media. They happened, they affected a huge majority of real Americans, and yes, they are real crises. Bottom line, while manyt on this board are worrying about whether we're tough because we haven't "experienced" war, or hardship or whatever, the rest of us are just surviving, existing, learning to be tough as nails. Travel around Europe and you quickly learn that the British are hated more then Americans. They are often banned in some cities. Even the poorest hooligan benefits from a nice exchange rate and can high roll it in Eastern European countries.

I never found that the Brits are hated. Europeans usually even think I'm British because young Americans just don't get to most of Europe.
