Obama got it to 4 percent from 9 percent when he took over. Remarkable. Trump basically hasn’t improved it a full percentage point

The more informative U6 under Obama was in double digits through his presidency, peaking at almost 18% in 2011. It is now at 6.8%. And the number of people in the workforce under Obama actually decreased to levels not seen in 50 years. There are now a record number of people in the workforce. For the first time on record, there are 7 million more jobs open than there are people looking for work.
Obama's policies were a band-aid needed to stop the bleeding thanks to Bush's recession. But he never took the band-aid off and let the economy actually heal and regenerate. He kept interest rates way too low for way too long to artificially prop up the markets to avoid taking a hit on his messaging of saving the economy. By the time Trump came along, all he had to do was rip off the band-aid (cut regulations, a more sane monetary policy, adopt more favorable trade policies) and the economy started really growing.
