I am watching Good Times, a docudrama depicting life in the Chicago ghetto in the 1970s.

It also references several pop cultural events during that period and even features a young Janet Jackson offering commentary about the times.

I would encourage others to watch this special program and insist your friends and neighbors do the same. Perhaps have a meet-up and watch it together and discuss the topics of that day and how they are still relevant today for the African American community.

For instance, in the opening of the show, a spiritual is sung and the words include "Easy credit's a rip-off". And this was long before payday and car title loans became commonplace. How profound!

And on the economy, there is one portion of the show where eldest son J.J. arrives for his interview at the unemployment office. The interviewer, going over several employment opportunities available asks the young J.J. "can you operate an IBM 360?" to which the protagonist replies "If I could do that, I would not need a job". Think about this when you see the commercials telling you to get your degree at home.


If you have not already discovered this gem of a docudrama, I would encourage you check your local listings and watch it. A mind is a terrible thing to waste, so open yours and watch Good Times. It is entertaining and you just might learn something.

Spike Lee calls Tyler Perry's krazy karacters "coonery and buffoonery". I think he's right. Tyler Perry is reinforcing the same lame old stereotypes that have been around for decades. But mostly, I just like saying "coonery and buffoonery".
