What Happened to all of the Chicanos?

For those who were around in the 60s and 70s, remember when Mexican-Americans were referred to as "Chicanos?" Now they aren't.

What the hell was that all about?

As far as I know, Chicanos were part of a political civil rights movement. Not all Mexican-Americans were Chicanos. I think, as a result of the movement, a lot of "politically correct" people referred to all Mexican-Americans as "Chicanos" but that was an inaccurate label.

I think Chicanos are still among us but, nowadays, we are more careful about accurately describing Mexican-Americans...(With the exception of the people that call them all illegals...)

A very good question, @aol scholar... I wasn't, necessarily, implying that I knew of any of these people, but rather accounting for the possibility that such people exist.

PC or not, everyone in LA calls Mex-Americans "Chicanos" or "Vatos" (They are not FOBs though, just Americans of Mexican descent). FOBs are called "Wetbacks" by even some of the Chicanos.

I just call 'em all "Spanish" like rice.

For example:
"My neighbor over there is Spanish, I think he comes from Mexico."

Youza sayza tomatoes, eyesa sayza Spanish.

This seems like the most reasonable explanation yet. I'll be sure to use it if the question ever comes up again.
