My toilet flapper is leaking, and I just replaced it about three years ago. (The replacment was supposed to be resistant to chlorine.) Is this a norma; service life for a flapper? I really don't care as they're so cheap, but was just curious.

Buy cheap and they only last a 2-3 years before they start to leak. The ones that are double the price will last 5 or 6 years.

The ones you get in a $15 kit with all the other hardware to replace everything have the cheap ones in them.

I lived down near Fredericksburg in a newly built house that had well water. It had 5 toilets, 12 years went by and not one single flapper failure. It is the chlorine that fucks your flappers.

Number of flushes has nothing to do with the life of a flapper. It is the chemicals, especially chlorine, that softens them, and makes them leak prematurely.

BTW, Fairfax uses chloramine not chlorine in normal operations. Once in a while it will change to free chlorine during temporary flushing.

Go for a higher-end one. The Kohler seats are closer to $40.00 but have better hinges that have the "silent close" feature, so if you close the toilet seat, it won't slam down and wake the house up. Avoid the plastic crap from Walmart.

The flapper has no idea what you are doing in the toilet bowl. Pee. Poop. Use it as a self rinsing punch bowl. Makes no difference to the life of the flapper. The chemicals in the tank, the frequency of flushes, the quality of the flapper are the main variables. In my experience the oversized flappers used by some toilets don't last as long, but that could be a quality issue.

I just replaced the flapper on my toilet today. The toilet was installed July 7th 2016. That is exactly 5 years.
