Whats the difference between Pop and Country Music?
Posted by: Confused ()
Date: December 19, 2009 07:30PM

I have a friend who hates country, but likes Pop music. So I listen, and I frankly can't tell much difference, except more talk about sex and "getting it on". Then the booty shaking. Some of the newer country singers annoy me with their fake twangs, but some of the other country music is basically the same as pop , but softer maybe?

It's not soda, it's baking soda you cook with.

This is interesting. I listen to both, and I think the only major difference I find is in marketing. Since Pop and Country have long been merged together(as well as Country and Rock for that matter)- marketing and arrangements seem to be the major difference. Most Country Stars are marketed to Middle America to be wholesome and their musical lyrics about God, Family, and if its about "Making Love" its done so in a more romantic subtle way. In Pop music its more in your face. Take Lady Ga-Ga for example. Her lyrics are crappy, but like most Pop music, she makes the most of the 4 chord predictability and uses catch phrases that are current such as "Paparazzi". In Country Music, its more about rural themes, or small towns, or lost love, so that has a different audience.

However, artists such as Taylor Swift, merge Pop and Country together in a close knit fashion that makes the genre barriers even lower. So really- music is crossing genres all the time. The old philosophy about "Pop" music- was it was whatever was "Popular". However, most consider it a style of music- that would probably be what goes in cycles. Most of the Pop music today is going back to the electronic 80s dance beat sound. Even some Country songs are incorporating some of this as well, but its using like banjos or acoustic instruments moreso, and thus produces the "Country" sound.

Hope this helps

The answer's actually a lot simpler than that: the country music you hear on the radio today IS NOT COUNTRY MUSIC. There was a time, decades ago, when country music was good. Hank Williams was a rock star before there was rock. What you hear today is pop music designed to appeal to a certain rural demographic. Like with any other genre, there is still legitimate country music being made, but you won't hear it on the radio or see it on CMT. Basically, country music you hear on top 40 radio is only 'country' the same way Avril Lavigne is 'punk'.

Check out Old Crow Medicine Show or Jimbo Mathus' Knockdown Society. Maybe skews a little more toward bluegrass/hill country blues, but guys like that are the real deal.

The difference has been blurred for some time. Not back when these two country clasics were recorded though:

To answer your question idiot Mead, today's country is all ballads. The playlist of any country radio station is nearly 100% dictated by the Country Music Association who leans towards sappy ballads about trucks, country is cool, and running into a past love when you are now married with children.

They go for the lowest common denominator because they feel ther audience is too stupid to think about anything.

I think the difference was the tawng. That's it. But if you look at someone like Taylor Swift, who's supposidly country, she doesn't even really have a tawng anymore.

If you compare the sound of Taylor Swift to Avril Lavigne , you will have a really hard time telling the difference.

There is a lot of real Country Music that doesnt have any twang whatsoever, yet its still not Pop, but Country. So I dont think twang has much to do with it. Celine Dion sings through her nose more than any "Country" singer I know.

Yes, Pop music is so much more sophisticated. Songs about the Papparazi and "Just Dance" really require a lot more thought.

As far as "requires more thought" - will put up ANYTHING Brittany spears sings against "iddy Biddy" any day.

The typical country ballad you hear on the radio is there because the CMA feels it appeals to the lowest common denominator their audience possesses.

And this morning my wife turned on the radio and was flipping stations and we heard "iddy biddy" followed by "achy breaky heart". Talk about LCD!

unless it has a fiddle and a pedal steel gee-tar and mentions a southern state or sweet tea then its all just EMO.

Modern country is basically old-school rock-and-roll with a southern accent and an occasional fiddle.

Wilco. Alt-rock band playing alt-country tunes.

I saw them live in Pittsburgh a few ago. I'm sure glad that show was free.

Country is pretty much anything the Carters stole from clueless hicks in the Shenandoah Valley back in the 30s.

Since Rock n' Roll, is from the South, it always kind of had a Southern accent. And Country accents are not the same as Southern ones. John Denver had a country accent, but it wasnt Southern.

For every 'Achy Breaky Heart" and "Itty Bitty" there are songs like "Aces", "Feed Jake", "Outbound Plane", "Annie's Song", and "Old Black Water" to name a few.
