Health Care Bill: What are we really getting?
Posted by: MrMephisto ()

The public health option got dropped. I know a couple other important parts got dropped. What are we left with?

If the main point of passing the bill (public health option) is removed from the bill, why keep going through with it?

EDIT 1: Forgot to add, no Vinke(1) posts, please. I no longer believe you have anything valid to add to any conversation about anything. We'reI'm trying to have an intelligent discussion.

For the rest of you, please try to keep politics out of it. I'm not asking about their agenda, I'm asking for the facts of what we're left with in the bill.

EDIT 2: Fixed edit 1.

Because it still results in a large increase in the number of people covered by insurance.

Because no one besides the ultra left described success as a public option...and only the ultra right described failure by the same criteris.

Because it would be a major prescedent..and will only grow in scope.

This doesn't mean anything. Please re-read the original post, Vince.

The remnants of the bill include a ban on denying coverage to children with pre-existing conditions and something about insurance companies being required to spend at least 80 cents of every dollar they make in premiums on providing care to the customers.

As MrMephisto said, the thread isn't about politics, but what remains in this bill.

That doesn't sound too bad. What's the catch?

According to http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601103&sid=aSF.fqMnWQbg, $848 billion.

"The 10-year Senate health plan, initially estimated to cost $848 billion, is designed to cover 31 million uninsured Americans and curb medical costs."

That doesn't sound like too bad of a catch. That translates into approximately $280.00 a year for ten years per person.

It's all about who is getting paid off now. Virginia will get expanded unfunded mandates out of the Bill in the form of Medicaid expansion - which is what Senator Nelson from Nebraska held out for (and many of these other late yes votes) so his state doesn't have to pay those costs.

Medicaid looks like it is being expanded too.

Medicaid is how they are trying to get around the public option. And they are passing those costs down to the States - which helps them keep the cost of the Bill down, to keep them looking like they are doing something good. State taxes across the country will be forced up - except for the folks who got their votes bought by ensuring the Fed will pay for their state.
