Need advice: ex-smoker tempted to start smoking again
Date: December 17, 2009 08:24AM

My 23-year-old niece quit smoking about 3 years ago.

Right now she's in a position where she's feeling strongly tempted to start smoking again, although she doesn't want to.

In particular, a lot of her friends smoke, she socializes in bars where people smoke, and she's under some pressure studying to pass an EMT exam.

I've never been a smoker myself, and I'm not really sure what to tell her (she's been commiserating with me about her situation).

Any advice or thoughts -- something I could say that might make an impression on her? Of course, she's familiar with all the health hazardous associated with smoking, which is why she quit in the first place.

Thanks..

Last time I checked, Fairfax County firefighters had to sign an agreement stating they would abstain from smoking and agree to periodic nicotine testing. Since EMT's and firefighters are crosstrained these days, I'm assuming the same regulation would apply to your niece.

She's in a different state that doesn't have that regulation (I just checked).

I say let her smoke. She is an adult, it is a legal product and she is old enough to make her own decisions. If you want to help her out though, email her this pic and tell her to carry it with her.

Tell her to join a gym. She needs to find out what triggers the habit and replace it with another vice. There are smokeless cigarettes if she is really tempted.

It really just boils down being disciplined, the craving for the high will always be there.

Tell her to buy some altoids. Just pop one when she feels like smoking.

Substituting one vice with another may exacerbate the problem at hand, which is habit forming compulsive behavior and addiction.

As long as fire and rescue are not testing for nicotine.

+1

and the taxes that idiot smokers donate makes it easier on the rest of us, and she is probably helping decrease the social security deficit, since she will probably die of the Big C before collecting much of it.

Actually, if you want to help, have her go visit a cancer center where people get there chemo and radiation treatments. It is sad place.

There are advances, instead of chemo in the arm, they now install a port in your chest:

HAHAHAHAHA! if that's true, try to stop smoking weed and drinking for a few months just as an experiment to see if you can. what is that? "i could but i dont want to." oh that's really original.

If I had a choice between a smoker and non-smoker in bed. I'd pick the smoker, they way wilder.

Whoever says weed is not detrimental to there health has been smoking too much of their product. Sure it doesn't have the additives and carcinogens that cigarettes have, but inhaling anything you burn is going to be toxic and take a toll on your lungs. Have you ever looked at a glass bong that hasn't been cleaned in a while? That's the exact same thing that collects in your lungs.

Agreed. I have always scoffed at people who use the 'weed is not addictive' argument. Yes, it is not physically addictive like extreme alcoholism ( i.e. you won't go into convulsions and die from withdrawal or be sick like when kicking heroin), but it is psychologically addictive and habit forming. I have known several chronic weed smokers whose moods changed and became irritable when they ran out of weed. The whole 'I can quit whenever I want thing' is bullshit also. Maybe you are forced to quit when you are trying to get a job, are locked up, or on probation, but most weed smokers are daily habitual smokers and never 'want' to quit unless forced to by extenuating circumstances.
