Any recommendations? I am looking for some interesting gift ideas. Here is one I thought of:

Get a Life was pretty good. The Ben Stiller Show was also pretty good at the time...

Here's an example. The Grungies, a Nirvana-like take on The Monkees...

I thought Get A Life was great. At one point in the show he befriended this weird little space alien named Spewie, who used to vomit profusely and make strange noises. The whole show was completely retarded.

In the days before I had cable, I would watch this. It wasn't terrible, but it wasn't great, either...

It is probably a bit more well known but I have to throw it out - Arrested Development. It is a classic, which is probably why it was cancelled after only 3 seasons. I guess Fox had to make space for all of that high quality reality television such as More to Love.

Yeah I've seen some real good deals on Arrested Development on Amazon via Slickdeals but I haven't actually bought it yet because I never watched it. It's just I've heard such good reviews it always tempts me.

Hidden Hills was another funny, quirky TV series from 2002/2003...

Unfortunately the show's name was stupid. You would immediately think of a mystery series or something along the lines of American Gothic, when it was really a comedy.

Arrested Development was hilarious.

This show was good also, although it started out on ABC (I think), it got moved to the WB.

I'm Alan Partridge, starring Steve Coogan. This is, I think, right up there with the British Office as one of the funniest, smartest comedies on TV. It's a little edgier than The Office because Alan Partridge is basically a prototype David Brent, only not as likeable underneath all the self delusion and buffoonery. I think Season 1 is out on DVD.

LMAO.

I remember S.P.E.W.E.Y. used to violently attack Chris and his roommate, it even attacked a little kid for no reason. Finally Gus beat him to death with a rake. And then they ate S.P.E.W.E.Y's carcass.

That show was great. It was bizarre, disturbing, humor that was almost offensive, like one big insult. It's a shame it's not available on Netflix.

I have every episode on DVD. You can get them from amazon.com

I think my favorite one is when Chris and his dad build a submarine in their shower.

Back when Benny Hill hit it big in the U.S., other British shows were being syndicated in an attempt to cash in. Two of the better shows were Dave Allen at Large and The Goodies....

My short-list of British shows (very popular in England but unheard of here in the States):

Shameless (especially seasons 1-3)
Skins (seasons 1 & 3 are good, season 2 sucked)
That Peter Kay Thing
Phoenix Nights

A show that wasn't very popular, but I thought was genuinely funny, was The John Larroquette Show. It wasn't a typical sitcom, it had alot of dark, dry humor and some of the show plots were surrealistic.

Dry and surrealistic doesn't usually make it on American TV. I kind of liked The Famous Teddy Z when it was on...

Sort of like "Ferris Bueller in Hollywood."

This is a show that was really ahead of it's time. 23 episodes between 94-95. If you watch it now and compare it to Family Guy it's nowhere near as good. But it had the same non sequitur/parody/surreal moments which was not being done at that time.

I actually like the original version of The Office. David Brent would kick Michael Scott's ass any day of the week.

The British Office was definitely way better. The best episode was the employee training one in which Brent unleased Free Love Freeway.

As for Get A Life, I remember the Zoo Animals on Wheels episode as being a riot, as well as the one in which Chris won a day with Sandy (Martin Mull).

Was that the same episode where Gareth's dream was to be with two lesbians, preferably sisters? And then Tim, to his shock said that he said he actually wished that he could hear more from Gareth?

Remember Hooperman with John Ritter?

Hooperman.jpg

He played a Fletch-like police detective. It was a comedy-drama that was doing pretty well in the ratings. Then ABC wanted Steve Bochco to add a "laugh track" and he said, "fuck it."
