Why do American cars suck??
Posted by: Statham ()
Date: December 28, 2017 02:38PM

Working for AAA’s roadside assistance, I tow away and service virtually every car on the road. What I’ve noticed is 7:10 it’s the American cats that have the most problems. Korean cars the fewest. Only cars worse than American cars is the pos Jaguars and Aston Martins.

Consumer reports in a 2016 study says otherwise. In fact, in the top 10 cars to stay away from, both Kia and Hyundai are on the list of cars that will not make 200,000 miles before dying a miserable death. Lolz!

I have a mercedes and volvo both at 220,000 they drive fine, look fine and dont need repair very often. '99 and '04

I would have a hard time buying an 'American' car. Most of our cars are manufactured in Mexico and assembled here. Most Jap cars are made here too.

F-150's are Ford's bread and butter. Their truck line accounts for 40% of their sales. Also, they are the leader in SUV sales as well. Their cars suck.

The unions are ultimately to blame.

Assume OP means Detroit built American cars or cars with American brand names. Most Toyotas and Hondas sold in the US are put together in the US. Their parts are still imported however. So if US branded cars suck, it's because the underlying components suck.

GM is notorious for building cars with a 100K lifespan. They figured that was enough mileage to not make the buyers too angry and they'd get repeat business every 5 years as things like electronics began to fail.

6 years ago I had 2 Fords and a Olds in my driveway. Now I have 2 Toyotas and a Honda. Still have a Ford, but it's my old F-250 that I keep to haul stuff. Otherwise, it's only Jap cars for me from now on.

You sure about that? I snagged this pic from another thread a GM car hitting 300,000 miles, and still going.

Probably spent $10K to get to that. The cars don't stop running at 100K miles. They start having systemic failures that require at least $1000 every time you take it in. Some fools keep sinking money into them. Other fools buy another GM and repeat the cycle. Smart folks learn their lesson and buy a Toyota.

GM engines go forever. Google it tard.

Actually I had a Toyota once, and it was the only car I had to experience engine failure. All the American cars I've owned (fords, Chevy's, and Chryslers) have gone 250,000 plus miles without ever putting a wrench on the engine. Toyotas are overrated and overpriced. Not to mention cost a fortune to repair. Much better off buying American.

Toyota did not make the American Cavalier. They made a version for sale in Asia only. What an idiot! Ahahahaha

Your post shows the dearth of knowledge you possess about real world problems people face everyday. American cars, for the most part are unreliable and are an awful investment. Imports are better investments and are much more reliable.

A Lexus LS or GX will run for 500,000 miles without much maintenance like its a joke. 300k is child's play.

You mean the block of GM engine cars stays together while everything else falls off or breaks.

American cars suck because the Japanese had all their manufacturing facilities bombed and re-tooled or rebuilt in the late 1940's. Japanese workers also have way high standards for production. American workers just want to "get it done any way possible to get the dollars." Most American assembly workers are union and drunks. Never buy a car that was assembled on a Monday or Friday in America.

Maintenance costs and reliability concerns determine resale value of vehicles. All you have to do is compare vehicle depreciation and you know which is superior. There is also the issue of replacement parts. Parts for American vehicles are actually more expensive than parts for Toyotas in the U.S.

The only reason ford sales are the highest is because of fleet sales. Federal, state and local governments are responsible for nearly half of those sales. If our tax dollars were spent wisely they would be buying Toyotas.

Lol at this Ravi guy. What cars does Pakistan produce, the goat rickshaw?

Japanese cars suck because they use the cheapest steel and parts that they can gather. No child labor laws means japs can use unskilled children to assemble their POS cars and trucks that rust completely through in the time span of a decade. I can buy a starter for an American car for $60 dollars all day long. A starter for an jap car is always $160 or more. Thanks, but no thanks.

A lot of that has to do with maintenance. People who buy American cars tend to be ignorant fucks who do not properly maintain their vehicles. People who buy Honda, Kia, Toyota, Lexus, Mazda are generally well educated and of higher intelligence.

After the accident that kills 1 or more people, does it really matter what manufacturer built the vehicle. Try having this discussion with what is left of you wife or kid.

Very true. I work as a professional drive-away for Carmax, driving cars cross country is my full time job so I put a lot of miles on a lot of different cars. Well, I'm here to tell you that the dumbest, most clueless car owners are definitely foreign car owners. I talk to Sales people all over and they constantly snicker when they can unload a POS import on a unsuspecting idiot. Their best sellers are domestic cars...

As a “professional” car driver, why would you rely on others for comments on reliability and performance?

I just drive them from point to point. Anyway, everyone seems to agree, imports are overpriced and overrated. Best bang for the buck is American, all the way...

American cars do suck. Mostly because of shitty union workers making mistakes and greedy CEOs who get bailed out while fucking over Americans like Obama did with GM. GM's always we're shit cars before and now I definitely wouldn't buy one because of that scam.

Toyotas, Honda's, Acuras and Lexus are the best. Nothing better that a Toyota land cruiser. Love it. For little cars the Civic and Corolla can't be beat. High gas mileage and you can will them to your grandkids if you wanted to.

Everyone but Consumer Reports you mean. Top 5 brands are not American and 8 of the 10 best cars are not American. All the way indeed...

Who fucking cares about that shit. Life is fucking short, buy what you want to buy. Try making yourself and your family happy instead of arguing about stupid shit on here.
I have a old Mercury Marquis and love it for the comfort. I have a fairly new Mazda that I enjoy driving on the backroads and I have a Nissan 4x4 truck that I enjoy driving in the woods and in the snow. Some vehicles are better than others, so fucking what?

Very true guys. Dollar for dollar, the best value and cheapest to maintain cars and trucks are domestic. Many uneducated liberals fall into the 'imports are better' because cheap Asian steel makes them lower priced. But in the long run you get hosed from rusted out bodies and overpriced replacement parts.

It's amazing to me that American automakers can't just reverse engineer Japanese cars and produce cars that are as reliable as those cars. Don't tell me American cars are as reliable, they just aren't.

American cars are getting better all the time. The Japanese auto makers always seem to be one step ahead. In the 70s and 80s when Honda and a bit later the Toyota sales started to take huge amounts of the market share GM Ford and Chrysler realized that they really needed to step up their game and increase their quality. Had they not done that our big 3 automakers would have gone the way of our electronics manufacturing industries and we would have no American automakers today.

This does not surprise me. The takata air bag disaster was a complete disgrace for Japan and dozens of people world-wide were killed in the attempted coverup.
So much for Asian quality eh?

They were flawed, yes but those same "defective" airbags saved a estimated 16,000 lives. Can't say that for the GM ignition switch cover-up.

How about those American made air bags? Oh thats right There are no American made air bags. Thats because Americans cant build any because they are too stupid.

Nonsense. Japanese quality is not only imferior, but it's vastly cheaper because of sweat shops and child labor. Those "cheap" airbags certainly didn't pay off for all those victims.

Jap cars are better, period. I wish it wasn’t so, but until we get the unions to fall in line, and worry about product quality over their vacation time, we aren’t going to get American brand cars that are reliable quality craftsmanship.

The reason that Toyota has the most reliable cars in the world is courtesy of an American named W. Edwards Deming. He took what he learned from working at Ford motor company and put Toyota at the top of the industry.

Couldn't agree more. I was shocked at the cost of replacement parts for my import. ($230 just for a starter). Add that with the cost of repair I was no better off than when I owned a domestic car. In fact, I went back to domestic and I'm damn glad I did.

Yeah, I was just looking at the cost of a new starter motor for my Cavalier, it's only $141.00 and a starter for my old Corolla is $166.00. Of course I have replaced the Cavalier starter 3 times but the Corolla is still using the original factory starter even though it is older and has more miles than the Chevy. Go figure.

I've always wondered why import engines don't last. It turns out that the exhaust valves are made very cheaply. That would explain why I had to have them repaired twice, then the engine finally gave up and seized from metal particles in the engine. Hyundai's are crap, just like they were in the 80's and 90's. Go figure.

I owned one of these Cavaliers until the transmission died while I was going down the highway at 60 mph. The transmission had never been good, the car had also had a problem with the starter. When it was new it was in the shop every other week getting another problem fixed. It is cheaply built. While the engine did make it to 78k, it didn't do so reliably. If all of Chevy's new cars are built like this Cavalier was, I won't ever buy Chevy cars again.

I feel your pain. I'm not sure what makes imports worse, the Shitty engines, cheap interiors or the unbelievable rust. I had a toyota tacoma once. OMG what a complete piece of shit. I couldn't believe how cheaply the body was put together. If the rattles and squeaks weren't bad enough, the body started rusting at the seams until you counld literally put your finger through it. Japanese garbage...

Good idea, my son had a Cavalier and the ignition switch caught fire on the 301 bridge and locked up the steering wheel. He crashed into a Toyota Camry. My son was killed while the people in the Toyota walked away without a scratch.

The import rust problem is epidimic, apparently. I thought it was just isolated to my toyota tacoma. After some basic research I found most imports have this same issue. Here is a link of people trying to deal with the problem.

Hope it helps! https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&f=71&t=1604696

Yes Toyota made the mistake of using an American company to build some of their frames. It is costing them plenty right now. Americans fuck everything up. The new frames are made in Mexico or Japan.
Thank God Americans are unable to make air bag canisters!

Buicks are excellent for running over wetbacks and negros

The issue isn't the frames. It's the rusted out bodies. Try to read the link next time. I wish I had a dollar for every nasty, rusted out import I ever saw...

The most American car made is the Toyota Camry. If you love America you should buy one.

Haha Americans get so fucking upset when you bring up the unreliability of their cars. Lived in the states until I was 25 and drove an impala. Biggest piece of shit I ever drove. Had a Ford Escape as a rental after my impala got totaled by a drunk driver and it sucked too. Since I moved to Düsseldorf for work four years ago, I’ve been driving a used Skoda and it’s been far more reliable than anything I’ve driven in the states.

I have a Lincoln and a Toyota. The Lincoln has more mechanical problems but I like driving it much better than the Toyota. I drive the Toyota in shitty weather and on long trips to save gas but it is not very comfortable and not fun to drive like the Lincoln.

Studies show people who drive domestic are less educated and not as financially savvy as import drivers.

Your post shows how incredibly ignorant you are. An automobile is NOT an investment. It is a required expense for living. An investment earns a return. An automobile purchase is a loss every single time. Even the collector car market is fickle and there is no garuntee your purchase will increase in value.

Yes, Scion was created by Toyota. So how did Toyota "take over" Scion?

had a mid 80s f150, gave it to a friend with 225,000 on it, all it ever needed was fluid changes, brakes and tires
had a mid 90s f150, sold it with about 275,000 on it, again, all it ever needed was fluid changes, tires and brakes,
now have a '12 f150 approaching 125,000, it's been flawless too

had a mid 90s Chevy car that turned into a lemon the day after the warranty ended

American vehicles aren't junk, but I wouldn't trust anything from GM to go the distance

That is a excellent point. Only Ignorant people buy American vehicles.

BMW makes garbage. Your 8 series will break down the day after the warranty expires.

There are no American car companies these days. They are global companies. The companies that are stuck with American union labor are the ones who struggle with reliability. My Lincoln gets repaired often but the dealer sends someone to my house to leave a loaner car and take my car to get repaired so it docent bother me any. I just get the factory extended warranty and let them take care of my less than reliable Lincoln.

Appearance. No matter what anyone says, but the Americans know how to produce efficient cars. Why are muscle cars Ford Mustang, Dodge Charger and Chevrolet Camaro worth, the appearance of which does not remain indifferent even to those who are far from automotive topics. This also includes formidable and instantly inspiring SUVs and pickups.
