Judge Rules Surviving Members of Sublime Cannot Use Band Name.

According to the courts, the Sublime that performed at California’s SmokeOut festival last week was not actually Sublime. A California judge has instructed the surviving members of the ’90s band, Eric Wilson and Bud Gaugh, that they cannot use the name Sublime for their group with new singer Rome for any additional live appearances, merchandise or similarly named Internet domain names. The band’s We Are Sublime Website has since been replaced with a photo of a muzzled dog with a sign around its neck that reads “Free Sublime.”

Now only if we could get a judge to block all the stupid white reggae bands inspired by Sublime.

They should tour as Sublemon (GET IT?)

Actually, they shouldn't tour at all, because Sublime sucks.

I believe the band resurfaced in early 2000 for two albums as "Long Beach Dub All-Stars," which surprisingly, were two really great albums start to finish. They just didn't get any publicity after Brad died.

Two other band members also formed "Long Beach Shortbus" (aka Shortbus) which had a good song or two on the two LPs they put out, but the rest sounded like nails on a chalkboard.

Well, if Axl Rose can be "guns n' roses" without actually having one original member still in the band (beside himself), why can't the ex-members of sublime be SUBLIME?

Cos the lead singer had personally trademarked the band's name. When he died, the rights passed to his family, who filed a trademark infringement suit against the surviving band members when they performed under the name.

But gnr was the first thing that came to my mind also when I saw the OP.

The truth about reggae today is that it's been passed on to white and/or non-Jamaican musicians the same way jazz has been taken up by white musicians, or the way rock n' roll was adopted by white musicians and audiences shortly after its inception. There is basically no new reggae coming out of Jamaica--it's been passed over in favor of dancehall; reggae (and ska) have been exported to all parts of the globe, and there's plenty of good new music coming out--if you take the time to look for it. But anyway...artistically (I don't know about the legality of it), it's not right to call this new band Sublime. Bradley Nowell wrote the songs, set the tone, and it was his band.
