The system following Irma now has a 60% chance of becoming a storm. Things are getting a bit active out there.

That's an excellent theory. Do you have evidence? Also, can you please explain how the massive hurricanes formed prior to the "global warming"? Also, isn't it called climate change now?

Irma is the biggest Atlantic hurricane on record

Except there haven't been. There have been less in recent years. And there were more bigger storms in the past at much lower levels of CO2 (e.g., late 1800s, 1930s). That's not even considering that measurement abilities have increased and that older data likely understates many of the earlier larger storms. When they were flying old piston prop-driven DC-6s they did not go into the strongest parts of storms to directly measure anything and did not have the remote measurement capabilities that we now have.

So, a single hurricane out of thousands of years of hurricanes is all the evidence you have? And when did these "records" start?

It is not.

What measure of 'bigger' are you citing exactly? The Saffir-MSNBC scale?

You are an idiot
If you have facts use them
You kept asking questions that you can easily look up

All these global-warming-induced hurricanes, and they're desperate to keep drinking the denier koolaid.

Well, Harvey may have just been a fluke, but if Irma is catastrophic, they will just have to start facing the music.

"Bigger" was your characterization (which is the first clue that you have no clue). What measure of "bigger" would you like to use? Area affected? Highest measured wind speeds? Barometric pressure? Overall kinetic energy?

Surely you had some specific measure that you were citing right?

With what? You are the one making claims. I simply asked you to provide evidence supporting those claims. Are you conceding you have no evidence to support your claims?

Are you having trouble following along?

Hurricane Wilma is the strongest Atlantic hurricane ever recorded, after reaching an intensity of 882 mbar (hPa; 26.05 inHg) in October 2005.

Irma's highest (or lowest being "bigger" in this case) measurement was 926 mb (dropped 1 from the below).

Quote

Category 5 Irma the 5th Strongest Atlantic Hurricane on Record

Dr. Jeff Masters · September 5, 2017, 10:13 AM EDT

Hurricane Irma intensified into an extremely dangerous high-end Category 5 storm with top sustained winds of 180 mph on Tuesday morning, putting it among the strongest Atlantic hurricanes ever observed. Irma's winds are the most powerful ever measured in an Atlantic hurricane north of the Caribbean and east of the Gulf of Mexico. Measurements from Hurricane Hunter aircraft found peak winds of close to 180 mph, well above the 157-mph threshold for Category 5 strength. At 11:07 am EDT, a dropsonde in Irma's eye measured a central pressure of 927 millibars, 4 mb lower than the previous pass, so Irma is still strengthening.

I want to act like a science guy? How? By asking a couple of questions? You really are confused.

The frequency of 'intense' storms would seem to be picking up.
Looks like Irma may be striving for a record.

You made the claim that:

It appears now that this was just something that you pulled out of your butt.

Alex Jones and Donald Trump have not yet told me there is climate change so sorry, not buying it. Yes I know the vast majority of scientists in the field of Climatology agree man is causing an out of control warming event that will cost trillions and massive human suffering. Sounds good but Trump is the man - wont buy it till he and Sean, and Tucker and Alex all agree.

I dont trust Rush though, he is really fat. I mean Alex is thick and Don is has a big gut but Rush is too fat for me. Also I like trains...

That bitch already has 185 mph winds., and is nowhere near finished developing. It might generate a storm surge that completely covers the Florida peninsula. Millions of people drowned. Trillion dollar devastation. Irreparable environmental damage. Georgia building a wall to keep out refuges. The UN sending 500,000 troops to maintain order.

That little mess in the gulf has now developed into a tropical depression. Fortunately, it seems to be targeting Mexico and not Texas.
Jose continues to gain strength.
Irma is on the warpath.

What the "consensus" of scientists actually say about the relationship between "climate change" and hurricanes/tropical cyclones:

Quote

"The most recent draft [August 2017] of a sweeping climate science report pulled together by 13 federal agencies as part of the National Climate Assessment suggested that the science linking hurricanes to climate change was still emerging. Looking back through the history of storms, “the trend signal has not yet had time to rise above the background variability of natural processes,” the report states.

i.e., There is no consensus that there is a relationship which can be shown at this point and substantial disagreement ranging from more to less to stronger to not. Modeling in some cases suggests that there may be. In others not. In others not above other natural factors. In reality, it has not been shown yet, in fact, definitely less in number, arguable in case of intensity depending on what's being compared and over what time period.

This storm is a monster that is for sure! Not sure what the pissing match on the thread is about. Warming trends are a factor known to intensify weather events such as hurricane - the more warm air the bigger the storm.

Umm, no. If this is the best exit strategy you can come up with, you failed at this too.

So you can get me on strongest / biggest

According to the NWS, Irma is the strongest storm ever in the Atlantic (not counting those that reached the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico). And it’s not far off from the all-time record hurricane wind speed of 190 mph.

That's bullshit that you're getting from another libtard at Vox and also now parroted by other sensationalist media who don't understand what NWS is saying in its tweet and it's been presented in a misleading way.

What it actually said:

#Irma is the strongest #hurricane in the Atlantic basin outside of the Caribbean Sea & Gulf of Mexico in NHC records http://hurricanes.gov

https://twitter.com/NHC_Atlantic/status/905080927948349440?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.vox.com%2Fscience-and-health%2F2017%2F9%2F5%2F16254872%2Fhurricane-irma-2017-caribbean-florida-keys-puerto-rico-wind-speed-record

Note no parens in the same way that Vox quoted it. NWS is saying that it's the strongest to *TRACK* outside of the area where stronger storms typically go at the same point. It is not saying that it is the strongest hurricane (stop) ("outside of" i.e., not counting some others) as Vox's parens implies.

And 'not far off' isn't the "biggest."

I wonder where Irma will stand when she hits Florida. She is still strengthening, so we'll see. Do note that the frequency of badass storms IS increasing.

The frequency is not increasing. In fact it has decreased. As far as power, it's mostly that we just have better measurement capabilities now since about the 1980s. Going back, the decades of the late-1800s and 1930s were worse than now. And most of those measurements were taken upon landfall not when at peak force as we now do using sats and other remote measurement.

Tropical cyclones/hurricanes is the most used measure since that's the larger indicator. But doesn't make much difference in how you count. About the only way that it comes out as being more frequent now is only looking at North Atlantic hurricanes since about the mid-80s. Which is why it gets cherry-picked for talking points. Virtually all other ways will show fewer.

No significant change in numbers over a longer period of time. And, as I said, you can see why they like to start at 1980 since that was a low point and from there it's easy to show an increase. Mostly because 2005 was an exceptionally busy year, then falls off again for the last 10-12 years.
