If a storm like that was heading my way I would take my family photos, bank and tax records, laptops , some extra clothing and drive like 500 miles away and check into a Hampton inn. Why did all those dumbasses stay and get fucked by the storm?

I did this once. I figured the hurricane wouldn't be that bad or as usual it go the the other way. Once it looked like the storm was actually going to hit it was too late to leave because all the road were closed and local authority said don't get on the roads.

Believe it or not, there are people who simply cannot afford to abandon their homes. Where would they go? Where would they stay? For some their home is their only thing of value, and they choose to stay and attempt to save their home.

True, it's the poor that really get fucked over. Imagine living paycheck to paycheck without any insurance, family and having bad credit. The hurricane then destroys your car, all your stuff and the place you stay.

I was lucky. I moved my car to high ground and place I was in survived the storm with only slight damage. My biggest issue was on day two I ran out of beer and the stores were all closed and boarded up.

Most people in this country are not like us here in NOVA. They do not have tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars in savings and as someone else pointed out they have no other option other than staying put. I am with you, if a major storm was heading this way I would be elsewhere long before the storm arrived. Fuck my house, the insurance company can deal with that.

50" of rain and we're fucked too. Not as bad since there's more high ground here but areas which aren't would be done.

Used to happen around here more. That's why every creek larger than a small stream that you see here has been bulldozed and rip-rapped and there are catch basin around any large development and in strategic drainage areas. After Hurricane Camille in '69 and Agnes in '72 wiped out things they did that so that it wouldn't happen again. But we've added tons more paved areas which greatly increases run off and more development in lower-lying areas so...

Hurricane Agnes was only 8"-18" around here. Everything near any river or other low area was flooded. 4 Mile Run, Huntington, Occoquan, Cameron Run, Difficult Run, Georgetown, Alexandria, etc., all were under water.

I have a cousin who lives near Corpus Christi and she left three days before Harvey. She uses her noodle and doesn't wait to be told what to do.

#1 these people are supposed to know whether they are in a flood zone, when they rent or buy land they are supposed to be told that

#2 Texas gets hurricane warnings yearly just like Norfolk,VA does. perhaps the news people made so much out of so little that people were jaded by false profundity

They showed on TV a nursing home with water about 4 feet up the wall and all these old people are sitting immersed in the water up to their chests. All they can tell them is to "hang on to your medications" until the water goes back down.

Nursing homes should at least placed everyone on the higher floors if they had nowhere else to evacuate to.
