90% of US black kids and 50% of all kids will have lived on food stamps

Too much poverty?
Too much Govt. charity?
I mean I guess I know one in five of us lives in poverty (that seems high) but 50 - 90% have the government feed them? My brother is a minister and once he needed them because even though he has a masters from Princeton and he was employed by the church and his housing was included he qualified for food stamps.
Christ I know this is a feeding trough for teh trolls but this seems pretty fucked up to me.

WT-Locian you're right but that only explains a bit of the greater picture of which I too am no expert. The fact is that for blacks they are still largely segregated in ghettos with very high unemployment, little meaningful job prospects or strong educational opportunities. Given these facts its no wonder that there is a high incidence of help afforded to them. Though I too think the 90% number sounds high.

There is a mindset in the African-American community that you must either be LeBron, Jay-Z, Oprah, Chris Rock, a gang banger or poor. If you are a young black person and express a desire to be an accountant, a scientist or a business person, you are derided by your peers as "selling out to the white man." I am hopeful with Obama as President that this mindset will start to change.

The racial component is interesting. I have no real understanding of why one subgroup would be so highly represented in this (yet I do understand the top percentile is white male).

Actually I think it's a bit flawed argument. I'm not sure if the cost of comparable level of living actually went up. The houses are bigger, cars are more sophisticated (and cleaner!), more variety in food, clothes are better, appliances are bigger/better, etc. etc.

Yeah but in my opinion houses were made ten times better 50 yrs ago. Material wise and had more land. Now you pay a half a million for junk with no land made with the cheapest materials and you neighbors house is within arms reach.

I'd have to agree with that. My grandmother's house was made out of brick (all the way around, not just the face), plaster, and hardwood floors. Solid as a rock. Now houses are all 2x4's, plywood, Tyvek wrap and vinyl siding - shit.

I'm not even going to bother researching this one. It seems like every time
"Huffy" trots out an article, the trail of money leads to George Soros.
I'd say the best bet is not to have children you can't afford but I know
thats only a daydream. Gots to have mo' chilluns.

November issue of Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine ran the story and Huff picked it up (of course I understand Huff is a biased source). I truly find the article hard to believe. Dismissing it because you dont trust Huff is fine. Just looking for insight on this...

A few months ago I was in line behind a man using food stamps. I had imagined they were little coupons but the guy had what looked like a credit card. He divided his groceries into two groups. The food which food stamps cover.... which, is this case, included soda, chips, salsa, and other snack items. And the group which wasn't covered.... 3 cases of beer. I guess he was having a party. He paid for the beer with cash out of his wallet. After he left, I asked the cashier if that happened often. She nodded, yes.
