medical marijuana and the military
Posted by: recruit ()
Date: November 02, 2009 12:08PM

I currently have a valid license to use medical marijuana in a legally prescribed manner from the state of California. I use it legitly to help with my migraine headaches. If I joined the military and was subjected to a piss test, would my license save me from being in trouble? What would the consequences be?

If you aren't in California the license means nothing.

What if I'm stationed in San Diego?

You can't use any drug to treat chronic illness and be in the service. Period.

EDIT: Allergy shots were considered a reason for not getting in. Drugs considered illegal by the Federal government would be a large disqualifier.

Shouldn't you be asking your recruiter these questions?

Either way, don't think for a second that the military will let you continue smoking marijuana, for any reason. You'll be declared unfit for duty because of your migraines before they say, "sure, light up a joint if you've got a headache."

Ok, maybe I can understand the rough n' tough Marine Corps, but what about some of the other softer, more gentler branches like Coast Guard or Air Force? Are they liberal enough to let it slide? My migranes are not very severe, but smoking does help me out every now and then

Federal law still holds marijuana illegal, so yes, you are breaking the law, especially on federal property.

so If I smoke on California property, come back, test positive but have nothing in my possession, it might fly? I would never take stuff on base.

Also, do they test for cocaine before you join? How far back do the tests go? Or is if only for one thing?

We're not talking about your local McDonald's, we're talking about the United States Military. While the state of California may not care if you're smoking marijuana for "occasional migraine headaches," the military has these things called "recruiting standards." One of the requirements of joining the military is "must not use illegal substances." Another is "must not have any debilitating, pre-existing medical conditions."

The military will not, at any time, for any reason, allow you to smoke marijuana. They might not even let you in because you have migraines, period.

You can't do drugs and be in the military. If your migraine headaches are that bad you need medication, than that alone will disqualify you.

All the services have similar standards, no branch is going to be more sympathetic to your medical situation than another.

If you are caught doing drugs while you are in the military, you will be kicked out with at least an "other than honorable" discharge. If your commander wants to be a dick about it, you can be taken to court martial and get a Bad Conduct Discharge, which fucks you over for the rest of your life.

Frequent and severe headaches is a medical DQ; especially if it is current, and being treated by drugs.

Don't need you getting a headache while you're in a firefight with the taliban, sparking up a jay to get some relief.

The Air Force or Coast Guard DEFINITELY doesn't want you working on their equipment stoned.

If you have that much of a problem with headaches, then you're ineligible for MIL service. I wouldn't want some high and cloudy minded individual next to me in the middle of an engagement. Go the Doctor and findd a prescription that works for your problem, and then maybe you can sign up for duty.

I only get headaches two or three times a year. I tried other medications, but marijuana is the best, the cheapest, and most natural. Pills have bad side effects. I wouldn't be high in a foxhole, but i would reserve the right to smoke if need be, off duty

hahaha. Say "I reserve the right" when you're in the military and watch how quickly you get laughed out of the service. After all these posts saying weed is not allowed, you still are under the impression that you are entitled to your grass.

The military is under its own set of laws (UCMJ), they don't give a shit what state you are from allows you to smoke for medical reasons.

Bottom line, if you need medical attention for your headaches, you are disqualified from the military.

I myself have a medical DQ, so I'm not trying to rag on you here. To the contrary, I want to encourage everyone to join up who happens to be interested in doing so. Smoking weed however is really a no-no in my view, because it effects your alertness and clarity of mind more so than your average medication does. Even relying on certain prescribed meds can DQ you as well. I would first of all suggest that you attempt to find something other than Weed that can help your problem. Look into other alternative medicines, there is really a ton of stuff out there. Also, you might benefit from checking with some specialists, and attempting to figure out what underlying conditions could be causing your headache issues. Who knows, the cause could be something as simple as food related, or it could be environmental. Try to find the cause as best you can, and you might end up eliminating the problem all together.

assuming you could find pot wherever you were stationed, how could you smoke on the DL in the military with random drug tests? Its one thing to have a cheat kit to pass the tests when you know its coming; its another to be caught off guard. I've heard of guys getting high in the military before...I am just no sure how they pull it off. What's their secret?

When they do random drug tests, they only look for certain drugs randomly selected. I know ecstasy abuse used to be a big problem because it was never selected in the urine tests.

They need to start doing saliva tests, as drug abuse instantly shows up in the screening and a wider range of drugs can be tested.

Besides the tests, if you screw up and hurt any of your squadmates due to your having toked, they'll dole out their own justice (At least they used to).

Okay, so I have a question also. I completely understand the absolutely no drugs period thing.
I am thinking about joining the Air Force and I have a current MMJ License. I only got the card because of my menstrual cramps and I had no insurance to get the medications I needed. So like these other people, it was a cheap way to try to get some relief. I could very easily pass a drug test of any and all kinds, and have no problem not smoking ever again in my life because I have figured an appropriate diet and a proper dosage time of mild NSAID pain relievers to control this pain therefore not needing the license. So when I talk to the recruiter I don't want to lie but I would really not to be DQ'd right away. Would they find out if I didn't admit it?
I have had the license since end of Jan. 2010 and have not smoked since the beginning of March. So if you guys have an answers please email me
B_Chismarx3@hotmail.com

Thank you

When you talk to a recruiter all you have to say is when he asks have you ever used drugs. tell him yes i have used marijuana. he will ask how many times and when was the last time. don't admit anything over 14 times because this is the limit as well as 6 months since last use. the only test they give is a piss test when you get to MEPS so it's not like they can actually see when the last time you smoked as long as it's more than 30 days. so just say 1 year and 5 times... that is what my recruiter told me to do. he said any other drug is a dis-qualifier... also i hope you aren't a single parent. the air force won't recruit any single parents period. if this is the case, a friend of mine married her best friend and got divorced 6 months after entering the AF. it'll be good for the friend because he will get all of the military benefits also even after divorce. also they are going to need all medical documents for everything that you tell them. so if you tell them medical marijuana... they are going to need every document from your doctor... so if he says that you are using marijuana more than what you are saying then you are fucked. even if you get in and the fbi checks find shit on you even when you are in boot camp, they will still kick you out and you will have to pay back any money that you have received including Enlistment BOnuses. Just don't say that you saw a doctor for the medical marijuana. any medical shit that you don't tell them, they have no way of finding out. however if you have ever received a ticket or been arrested, be ready to tell them every detail about all of them.

This sort of falls into the same category as the butt ugly gay shit, but it's not repulsive. Don't ask, don't tell.

Just like the homos, as long as you don't flaunt it and keep it to yourself , you should get through. But don't be going to your sergeant and say you need the afernoon off to do bong hits because you have a migraine.

You can beat the drug test as long as you don't get stoned all the time and let it build up in your system and you can figure out when the random or scheduled tests are due.

Be smart.

On the issue of medical benefits, a former non-military spouse may receive such benefits but then find him or herself a new job. If the new job provides medical coverage as part of the employment, the armed services benefit ceases.

But if the former spouse loses their job and thus their medical cover, the previously granted armed services medical benefit can be re-instated. If the non-military spouse re-marries they lose the benefit. If that new marriage fails, former benefits may be re-instated except the medical benefits.

Eat Shit and Die.

If your menstrual cramps are that painful you need weed to stave off the pain, you may have a deeper medical issue that could disqualify you from military service.

no you idiot. there has been a law that if veterans were using marijuana then they'd be disqualified from being prescribed pain killers from VA hospitals. however the new law states that if a person is prescribed marijuana legally in those states then they are not disqualified from receiving Oxycontin, Morphine, and whatnot. nowhere does it say that they can use marijuana in the VA hospitals.

Think again. What you are saying is that regardless of the number of years you are married once divorced from a military person you auto
automatically get medical coverage as a benefit. That would mean the DOD is left paying for the medical coverage of ex-spouses until they remarry, because the DOD doesn't give a rats ass if you have a job that provides coverage before they stop your coverage. The DOD would go broke and therefore your logic is flawed like you and your know-it-all atitude that offends others here so often.
A friend of mine was married for 18 years and got no benefits, no medical, no commissary, no exchange, no dental, no nothing. Your act is fake, tiring and old.
To know you are stupid takes a little smarts.

In your warped mind the DOD would be paying everyone's medical because where is the incentive to ever pay for your own? Duh?

You must be an illegal immigrant who sees the world as their oyster. That is easy to do when you only comprehend half of reality due to your lack of English comprehension. Either spit out the truth or shut-up, people like you have created to much chaos already and therefore distracts society from real issues. With you it is mind over matter, I don't mind that you don't matter.

Now you eat shit and die you zombie.

Ok, so if you have gotten an MMJ card in your life and want to join the marines, all you have to do is "Don't ask, Don't tell" like the homos and you're all good? I haven't smoked for a long time so I know I could pass a test.
