While midterms are usually a tough time for the party that leads the government, 2016 was really the year that the map favored the Democrat Party. In 2016, the majority of the Congressional seats in play belonged to the GOP and the Democrats stood poised to retake control of the Senate and there was even an outside chance that they might retake the House. However, 2016 ended up being a far better year for the GOP than anyone expected. The Republicans held on to a handful of seats they were expected to lose and they kept control of both the House and the Senate while also winning the White House.
2018 is a much tougher map for the Democrat Party as the vast majority of the seats up for election are currently held by the Democrats. There won’t be much chance for them to retake either chamber of Congress, but there will be a golden opportunity for the GOP to expand their majorities.
Even worse, for the Democrats, they have no “bench.” There are no readily available candidates ready to put up a fight for these seats.
