You have to keep your hat on when you interpret news.
* this news claims Trump made the statement before the import tax - however Trump may have known about it before Japan issued the official statement
* Japan is a close ally who helped build usa's tech infrastructure. Japan came under USA terms after WWII, USA "helped rebuild" (and profited from in some quarters I would guess), and is an Ally - considered a part of the USA but not a state at one point as countries are under duress of surrender of attack they initiated. they elect presidents, have a constitution and so on. (so does china)
* some in Japan swore to "get back at" usa by taking over usa using economic supremacy
* you can't say really if USA is accepting a hike to help Japan or if USA will take countermeasure, or if infact Japan is helping USA by providing labor cheaply - a trade deficit transfers wealth from one country to another but which way PROFITS flow is quite another matter ... one has to examine the difference of lifestyles in the two areas effected to gauge which way that goes if not both ways
* you can't say really if USA is accepting a hike and "denying a chinese hike" by publicizing the Japan hike does exist, or if Japan is pushing the hike and USA will take countermeasures OR if Japan is simply raising tax on Japanese for Japanese political family "living large" funds. It could be a fein measure to throw another country off game so they do not think Japan is a "strong usa ally" or quite the reverse.

however the article doesn't mention other suppliers - which may be aggressively taking a step up
nor could such an article mention deals usa magazines have no way of knowning about - you'd have to be in the industry and be street wise to decipher it CORRECTLY
