So..how many of you feel safer on FFXU knowing that Gravis...RegisteredVoter and MePhisto are tracking IP addresses to protect us? I know I do...in fact my erections have been firmer and longer since knowing I am being protected. Do you? If you dont perhaps this will help...

All visitors to FFXU should not assume that their privacy is being protected. Quite to the contrary there are a number of “regulars” who feel it is their duty to police those who visit this site against persons they believe are undesireable. Below are instructions to protect yourself. If you choose not to follow them…do not assume your privacy is guaranteed.

You will learn how to avoid getting tracked by gravis. You wont have to wait for his slow servers to load every time you view a thread.

Go to start > run > %systemdrive%/windows/system32/drivers/etc > run the hosts file using notepad and paste the following

127.0.0.1 adaptivetime.com

127.0.0.1 www.adaptivetime.com

127.0.0.1

And now your ip is hidden from gravis no matter what browser your using.

That sounds more like a menstrual cycle that is aligned with the phases of the moon.

-----------------------------------------------------------------
The function of conservatives is not to meet every liberal program or scheme with a denunciation or a destructive counterscheme, but rather to weigh its advantages and defects, supporting the first and challenging the second. A declaration of ideological warfare against liberalism is by its nature profoundly unconservative. It meets perceived radicalism with a counterradicalism of its own.

Okay, what in the hell is all this shit about? I don't spend all day on here, so I haven't taken the time I suppose is necessary to understand what all this crap is about...so, for those of us who visit here and post only occasionally, can someone give me the cilff's notes version on what any of this is supposed to mean? Are these posts the work of some disgruntled member here? Or is someone actually tracking my ip address and looking at my personal shit? And if so, why?

You messageboard people scare me. This is why I don't usually last long on these kinds of forums.

A little bit of both, Mr. Misery. The poster of this thread is not trying to help the "common man". This poster is trying to scare some people and annoy others.

There are, however, a few posters who have tiny images embedded into their signatures. Long story short, if you download these images, you give your IP address to the people who own them.

There is some controversy over the morality of this. The few posters that employ these tiny images claim that they are not abusing the information, and that they are only using the information to identify unregistered "stalker troll" posts, people who use unregistered names to harass or to expose personal information of others..

There are a few people who feel as though their privacy is being violated by these tracking images.

>

These "tiny tracking images" tactics are not exclusive to message boards. Thousands of websites use similar tactics. You have every right to be afraid...

You must not have been lurking for a very long time. I'm relatively new here and I know that this forum does, indeed, have stalkers (cyber or otherwise). People have received harassing calls at their place of business... Others have had their real life identity exposed.

Please note, I used quotation marks along with the term "stalker troll" to encompass other definitions of stalking that I may or may not agree with.

some info for people who dont "get it" when it comes to IP addresses and tracking them

What exactly does an ip address say about me?

it can be used to identify the location of your ISP and uniquely identifies you.

So it says where I am?!

no, it says where your ISP is. if you put your an IP address into a lookup tool like this one: http://www.melissadata.com/Lookups/iplocation.asp it will tell you some general information.

this is an example of information about my personal stalker/troll that is a huge fan of mine.

IP Address Location
IP Address24.125.176.133
CityRichmond
State or RegionVirginia
CountryUnited States
ISPComcast Cable Communications Holdings Inc.

as you can see, it's not much information other than the city they are in.

What good is that information?

it's worth jack squat. what is important is the log of the address it's access from.

Quote
example log entries for my troll
24.125.176.133 - - [05/Jul/2009:01:28:06 -0400] "http://www.fairfaxunderground.com/forum/read/40/209121/209268.html#msg-209268"

if you look at each post, you will notice each one is made with a different poster name.

individually, each post and name is from a faceless unknown but together you can see this is one troll. you can actually call them out on their bullshit, especially when they respond to their own posts.

So you look at what other people do?!

i have better things to do than look at what people do on FU. i only check the logs when trolls start getting out of hand and even then i use a search to filter out irrelevant information.

So you look at what I do?!

no, not unless you are a troll.

I'm not a troll, so why are you looking at what I do?!

I'm not.

I'm calling the FBI because you are hacking me by having my IP!

*sigh* you do that.

Make all the displays of my IP you want, you and I know I don't make 90% of the posts you claim I make. You take advantage of the fact people here will take your word for everything you post.

You really think I'm the only one trolling you? Just like you claimed that I was the one starting all the "Hide your IP" threads, you don't know shit.

You should really tell people why you are so pissed at "Vargis Rose." Maybe a little history lesson for the forum would do some good. Matter of fact, why don't you disable robots.txt from adaptivetime so people know what I'm talking about.

hackers rarely attack clients directly. 99% of the time it will be something gets downloaded and executed from a website. servers are directly attacked and when compromised, the sites they serve are altered so the former will happen.

that said, i have the chinese try to hack into my machine via ssh (from the login attempts, it looked like they thought i was running an ssh server on windows). how could the chinese possibly find my ip address? a) i visited a website they have server side access to, so they have the same type of information like the tracker images provide or b) make one up that is in the region you want to attack and have at it. so, if you are attacked directly, it's not going to be related to FU.

if you go to any site, the server admins will know your IP address. it's like being afraid of being someone coming to kill you because your street address is in the phone directory.

With an IP address, someone can try to DOS your computer, but a single user can't do much to you.

On Gravis' skill level, the most he could do is a basic ping flood, but with today's broadband connections, this is irrelevant. He could DOS Vince(1), since Vince is using a 56k modem, and Gravis has much more bandwith than him.

On a very experienced level, someone could scan your open ports and try something malicious, but I am confident that is beyond anything Gravis could handle.

that said, i have the chinese try to hack into my machine via ssh (from the login attempts, it looked like they thought i was running an ssh server on windows). how could the chinese possibly find my ip address? a) i visited a website they have server side access to, so they have the same type of information like the tracker images provide

Basically, the answer is "yes, with your ip, hackers can attack your computer. it is, however, improbable that the hacker got your ip from FU... just make sure you have a good firewall."

I missed something here. A person posts an image that they are hosting, and they seen when anyone sees the image. (Your browser connects to their image server, revealing your IP address.) But there is nothing to connect that IP address to any particular FFXU user. The IP address could be anyone on the Internet who happened to access that image.

The forum operator (Cary) can see the IP address of anyone who posts on the forum, and can tell which of these randomly-generated-name posts are all from me (more or less). But that doesn't have anything to do with those images hosted on another server. Cary doesn't need the image server's access logs; the image server doesn't have any information on who is posting anything.

There is no connection between someone reading or posting on FFXU and any IP address that happens to access someone's image URL. I don't get it. How is this supposed reveal engineered?

(I mean, Cary can tell, more or less, that a collection of posts is from me. Not that all posts, more or less, are from me!)

Someone can either see the IP addresses of posters, or not. They can only do that if they have special access to FFXU (some kind of admin mode, or actually reading the server logs). And that person would only be Cary, wouldn't it?

Someone's random images are not useful in that process; it doesn't tell you anything useful at all.

Are you talking about PMs? Detecting alt accounts via PMs, by putting unique images into PMs and seeing that two PM threads are coming from the same IP address?

That would work.

Not being registered, PMs didn't occur to me...

But you still can't correlate PMs with public posts in any way.
