Rep. Keith Ellison (D., Minn.) spoke Wednesday at the University of Minnesota, where he said that former President Barack Obama deserved some of the blame for the Democrats collapsing in 2016.

"Speaking of presidential politics, was President Obama responsible for some of the failures of 2016 and if so, how?" one of the moderators asked.

"Yeah, he was," Ellison said.

Ellison, who serves as the deputy chairman of the Democratic National Committee, said Obama could have been a better party leader.

"I totally voted for many things that he supported … But Barack Obama could have been a better party leader, and I think that the fact that he wasn't has put his legacy in jeopardy," Ellison said.

Ellison said Obama's legacy will not revolve around the building that will be constructed to hold his presidential papers in Chicago.

"His legacy is the work that he has done, which I believe is tremendous. But, given that we did not – we lost a lot of state house seats, governorships, secretaries of states, his true legacy is in danger," Ellison said. "And I think that he can't say that he wasn’t part of those losses. I mean, who else. Right?"

So Ellison thinks Obama is a Russian. It all makes sense now.

I was no fan of Obama, but thought it important to treat him respectfully in his role as POTUS.

Obama was at the electoral level an effective and unique force in politics. I don't think his "brand" was replicable, as the the Democrats are discovering. But I don't share Ellison's views, which are not as uncommon among Democrats as some might think.

The Democrats actually suffer from a compliant press which often acts as an arm of the Democratic Party. It makes them lazy, and less likely to truly compete for votes. Yes, not the verb "fight", but rather the verb "compete" - there is a vast difference. And the compliant press infuses all too many with a sense of moral superiority, as this is going to win the competition, yes, competition, for votes. In this vein, would anyone really think Debbie Wasserman Schultz was an effective and competent manager? And even if she was (a hard notion to accept), being a part time leader of the party was simply not a good idea.

I know this post will not sit right with a lot of Democrats. But the most effective politician in the last 25 years has been Bill Clinton, and unlike his spouse, who sought a coronation because we were all supposed to be with "her", he truly competed for votes. He captured the working middle class.

A warning for Republicans - Trump (not really a Republican in the traditional sense) is likely not a replicable solution either. They better have a well led organization independent of Trump, and have only to look to the Democratic Party to see what happens when relying solely on the force of personality of a popular President.
