Vice President Pence used a personal AOL email account to conduct official business while he was governor of Indiana — and the account was hacked, according to reports.
Pence used the private email to discuss sensitive matters and homeland security issues including the state’s response to terror attacks across the globe with top advisers, the Indianapolis Star reported Thursday.
Pence, as President Trump’s runningmate during last year’s campaign, was a fierce critic of Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server while she was secretary of state.
The Vice President said FBI investigations into Clinton’s use of a private email server reinforced the notion that she is “the most dishonest” presidential candidate in decades.

He told NBC’s Chuck Todd last year that Clinton “operated in such a way to keep her emails, and particularly her interactions while secretary of state with the Clinton Foundation, out of the public reach.”
Pence spokesman Marc Lotter called any comparisons between Pence and Clinton “absurd,” noting that Pence didn’t deal with federally classified information as governor.
But cyber security experts told the Indianapolis Star that using the AOL account was just as susceptible to hacks as Clinton’s server.
Indiana law does not prohibit lawmakers from using a private email, but they must turn over any emails concerning state business to be recorded and logged.
The personal account was indeed hacked by a scammer last summer who posed as Pence in an attempt to get people to send money.
Counterfeit emails were sent out to all of Pence’s contacts claiming he and his wife were attacked in the Philippines and had been robbed.
