silly.

Osama screwed us, but we attacked Irag.

Or maybe it was Obama.

Either way, they almost destroyed america, they almost made us capitulated to the islamist jihadi.

I think we got pwned. But it was the right wing pundits who saved us from those jihadis.

The function of conservatives is not to meet every liberal program or scheme with a denunciation or a destructive counterscheme, but rather to weigh its advantages and defects, supporting the first and challenging the second. A declaration of ideological warfare against liberalism is by its nature profoundly unconservative. It meets perceived radicalism with a counterradicalism of its own.

I was working at home, typing something on my computer while listening to Howard Stern talk about Pamela Anderson's breasts when he, Robin, and crew began to comment about some idiot that flew a plane into one of the World Trade Center buildings. ... then the second plane hit the second building. Whoa. Yeah. I remember that.

Likewise, though different feeling, I recall being in an 8th grade drama class - November 22, 1963, at the front of the auditorium seats with the rest of the class, a classmate giving some speech or something, when someone from the principal's office opened the door way behind us at the rear of the auditorium (one of those "ca-chunk" bars that extend horizontally across the door) and call out to our teacher, "Mr. Allen, the President has been shot." "WTF?" we all thought.

I have an mp3 recording of that entire show. It's eerie to listen to it and remember back to how everything unfolded that morning.

Me, I was on conference call when someone mentioned "a plane attacked the World Trade Center". When I got back to my desk, I saw a friend in NYC had emailed me saying that someone flew planes into buildings, and another email from someone in Crystal City saying that there was smoke coming out of the Pentagon. The web was down so I didn't really know what had happened. I replied to my friend in NY, asking him "What kind of planes were these?" I'll honestly never forget the feeling in my stomach when I read his terse reply- "They were commercial airliners". Then we got evacuated from our building.

I was working in DC. I had just gotten into the office when one of my co-workers said, "Two planes have hit the World Trade Center." I remember saying, "How on Earth could that happen?" My co-worker said, "It must be a terrorist attack."

We found a TV in the office and watched the Today Show. They were doing a live report from the Pentagon when the correspondent said, "I just heard an explosion. I don't want to alarm anyone, but I think we have just been attacked."

Our office was on the top floor of our building. I went out on the roof and could see smoke rising from the location of the Pentagon. Soon after, we were evacuating with the rest of DC.

Fucking crazy day.

I was up in Maryland at a training class. Another instructor comes into our room and said "Terrorists just attacked the World Trade Center. It's burning right now." We all got up and went to the TV, seeing the replay of the 2nd playing. Some lady was crying, another guy said "This is fucking war!!"

Then we went back to class and THEN another guy comes in and said "The Pentagon just got hit". WTF??

The rumors were flying all day....8 planes in the air...The White House is targeted....the beltway is shut down....crazy, crazy crazy. One thing I heard was you couldn't move on the beltway, so when the class was finished I headed up 95, cut across I-70 and came down Route 15 and grabbed 66.

No shit. I remember hearing that the White House had been hit, that a car bomb went off at State, that there was a fire on the Mall and that the USA Today building, which was in Rosslyn at the time, was on fire. I kept expecting to hear reports out of Chicago and LA. Tense shit.

Yep, remember all of that. I saw the second plane hit on TV and could tell it was a big plane.

One of the secretaries in the office got a call about 30 minutes later from her son who was an attache working at the Pentagon and she announced that the Pentagon got hit.

Thats when the shit hit the fan at the office and we called it a day. Of course by then metro was shut down and I walked home all the way to Ballston from Downtown DC.

I think one of the reasons you heard so much about the Mall, USA Today and State being on fire was that from different vantage points around the area the smoke from the Pentagon could have appeared to be coming from those locations.

Yeah, there were all sorts of rumors going around. After I got evacuated, I was stuck in a giant traffic jam on the toll road, listening to WTOP. One of the news reports was that there was an explosion at the State Dept. Another frantic newscaster was live on-scene at the Pentagon, she confirmed that a plane had crashed in PA, and that another plane was only minutes away from entering DC airspace. I remember scanning the sky, worried that I might actually see it. That was pretty fucked up. Luckily, it was not true.

I was watching tv when the second plane hit - unusual for me, but someone in the office had sent out an email shortly after the first plane so we were all trying to understand what was happening. Then the rumors started. Our building, located about 2 blocks from the capitol, was evacuated shortly thereafter. VRE was already shut down so I ended up taking metro home and a stranger got me back to my car. I have never seen a metro station that crowded manage to be so silent. And it was the only time I've felt like other commuters cared about the people around them.

That's interesting. I remember the Metro being dead silent for several days after the attack. It was really something.

I was in 9th grade at the time, 14 years old. Christ, we had hardly been in school an entire week...

Hard to believe it's been 8 years already.

I remember thinking that it was just so insane that every tv channel (it seemed) had 24/7 news coverage for what seemed like weeks afterwards.

I lived in Fairfax County at the time (I still do in fact) and I remember we didn't have school the next day. My mom and I ended up going to the grocery store the day after the attacks and seeing American flags all over the place..there was something so eery about that.

I remember that all the newspapers were gone from the rack.

Absolutely unreal..

It's a damn shame that we've lost that unity we had as a country. Now it's red vs. blue, libs vs. cons, etc. Makes me sick.

The Pentagon has many of its own fast food operations, including Subway, McDonald's, Dunkin' Donuts, Panda Express, Starbucks, Sbarro, among others.[44] A multibranded KFC, Pizza Hut, and Taco Bell restaurant opened in 2003, when renovations to the food court were completed.[45] Food services are managed by the Navy Exchange. The Center Courtyard Cafe reopened in Spring 2008,[46] replacing the "Ground Zero Cafe" snack bar that was previously there.

Clinton/Gore had a record of actually preventing terrorist attacks before 9/11.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2000_millennium_attack_plots

Bush was in office 9 months and ignored evidence, including his own intelligence briefings.

So it's bad to name a cafe after the location of a terrorist attack that killed 3,000 Americans but it was okay to name the place after the nuking of Hiroshima, which killed tens of thousands of Japanese civilians, including women and children who had their flesh burned away or died of radiation poisoning? Maybe they should have skipped the name from the start.

Research... it was renamed FROM Ground Zero Cafe after 9/11. It got its name from cold-war era as a semi-joke that it would be a target for nukes by the USSR, being inside the Pentagon and all.

I probably wasn't clear. I was asking a rhetorical question. I realize that the Pentagon thought it was best to change the name of the cafe from Ground Zero after 9/11, but why did they name it Ground Zero in the first place when the term his historically linked to Hiroshima?

Like these?

World Trade Center Bombing, February 26, 1993: The World Trade Center in New York City was badly damaged when a car bomb planted by Islamic terrorists exploded in an underground garage. The bomb left 6 people dead and 1,000 injured. The men carrying out the attack were followers of Umar Abd al-Rahman, an Egyptian cleric who preached in the New York City area.

Bombing of the Federal Building in Oklahoma City, April 19, 1995: Timothy McVeigh and Terry Nichols destroyed the Federal Building in Oklahoma City with a massive truck bomb that killed 166 and injured hundreds more in what was up to then the largest terrorist attack on American soil.

Khobar Towers Bombing, June 25, 1996: A fuel truck carrying a bomb exploded outside the US military's Khobar Towers housing facility in Dhahran, killing 19 U.S. military personnel and wounding 515 persons, including 240 U.S. personnel. Several groups claimed responsibility for the attack.

Empire State Building Sniper Attack, February 23, 1997: A Palestinian gunman opened fire on tourists at an observation deck atop the Empire State Building in New York City, killing a Danish national and wounding visitors from the United States, Argentina, Switzerland, and France before turning the gun on himself. A handwritten note carried by the gunman claimed this was a punishment attack against the "enemies of Palestine."

U.S. Embassy Bombings in East Africa, August 7, 1998: A bomb exploded at the rear entrance of the U.S. Embassy in Nairobi, Kenya, killing 12 U.S. citizens, 32 Foreign Service Nationals (FSNs), and 247 Kenyan citizens. Approximately 5,000 Kenyans, 6 U.S. citizens, and 13 FSNs were injured. The U.S. Embassy building sustained extensive structural damage. Almost simultaneously, a bomb detonated outside the U.S. Embassy in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, killing 7 FSNs and 3 Tanzanian citizens, and injuring 1 U.S. citizen and 76 Tanzanians. The explosion caused major structural damage to the U.S. Embassy facility. The U.S. Government held Usama Bin Laden responsible.

Attack on U.S.S. Cole, October 12, 2000: In Aden, Yemen, a small dingy carrying explosives rammed the destroyer U.S.S. Cole, killing 17 sailors and injuring 39 others. Supporters of Usama Bin Laden were suspected.

There are more, but I think you get the idea.

i was in 4th grade when it happened. my teacher would regularly have the news on in the morning before class really got started, word was out that a commercial airliner stuck one of the towers.

i was personally confused a little bit, then live on tv the whole class saw the 2nd plane hit the other tower. something clicked that this was wrong.

around 1030 i think it was my class was walking down to music class, and two teachers who helped around the school were hysterically crying, everybody was so confused.. soon after the principal got on the P.A and told the school something tragic happened today but we are safe and to just get through the day.

8 years later and billions and billions and trillions of dollars later we are here. we had to go to war with the 'terrorist' right?

I had just turned on the tv after my wife called to tell me about the first plane hitting. While watching the live feed from the helicopters on the news I saw the 2nd plane hit. I was relaying to my wife over the phone (she was at the office with no tv) what I was seeing. When the 2nd plane hit I told her, "I was just watching and a 2nd plane just hit the other building!" She said, "What? Seriously?" And I said "Yeah, I was just watching and this plane came in from off the screen and slammed into the other building, at least I think so because with the camera shot I am seeing I can't be certain if it was the same building or not. But we are definitely under attack by somebody, one plane might have been an accident, two is deliberate".

The videos of the scene was bad enough with two burning skyscrapers. I was thinking, "How the hell are they going to get the fires out, or the people out" - I hadn't even thought about the buildings falling. When the first one went down all I can remember saying is "oh my god" about 3 or 4 times (from when I saw the falling start until the big cloud of dust boiled up from the ground) - finally my wife asked me "What?" over the phone and I told her that, "I can't be certain, but I am pretty sure one of the buildings just fell, because all I can see from the air shot is a cloud of smoke... but if what I am seeing is right... the whole building is just gone." She said, "What do you mean, gone?!" And I told her, "All I can see is maybe a corner sticking up, but the rest of the building... at least 80% of it just fell straight down".

And then I remember talking to her and just waiting, because I knew the 2nd one was going to come down too - it was just a matter of wondering how bad it would be. I remember thinking maybe it wouldn't be as bad as the first one because the damage was much higher up on the building....

I had a relative working out at Dulles that day, and I remember there was a rumor of a plane circling that had been reported from the staff there.

We lost a couple of personal friends that day - one down here and one in NY (not to mention family and friends lost by our friends).

It still makes me sick and angry when I think about it. I force myself to watch the shows on Discovery and such about it - I don't want to forget. Folks that want to put their head in the sand and act like it didn't happen are just fucking losers in my book. It's one thing to move past it, but if you want to act like it didn't happen you are just setting yourself to have it done to you again.

Another thing that I remember is seeing the footage of the people jumping out. One guy was trying to scale down the exterior. They don't show that too much anymore. I still ask myself "what must have it been like up there? What hell must it have been for people to choose to jump to their death rather than die in there?"

I live near Dulles airport so I'm used to hearing airplanes all the time. I remember the night of 9/11 as eerily quiet except for military aircraft flying overhead from time to time. I will never forget.

last night on the history channel they were showing "102 minutes of 9/11" or something to that degree.. composed of home videos seamlessly showing the history of what happened minute by minute of that morning. at 9:02:00 ish these two girls were on a building (32 stories up) video taping the first tower burning, and they happended to observe people, falling to their deaths. as they were trying to comprehend what and why they would be jumping off (as a person goes soaring down) at 9:03:00 you hear the two girls SCREAM with terror the video camera jumps down then back up and you see an giant explosion with fire into the second building. straight chills up my spine.

after watching that, it makes me want to join the military, or something to kill some mother fucking talibanies

That was really a good documentary.
