Normal people weren’t the only ones hurt by Monday’s turbulent stock market. The world’s richest people saw losses in the billions, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.

Here’s a list of 12 individuals who lost more than $1 billion Monday, along with their overall ranking in terms of world’s richest people. Their combined losses add up to nearly $23 billion. The only person among the world’s 10 richest people not appearing on this list is Ingvar Kamprad (#8), who lost $820.3 million.

#2 Amancio Ortega: -$1.5B

#3 Warren Buffett: -$2B

#4 Carlos Slim: -$1.6B

#5 Charles Koch: -$1.3B

#6 David Koch: -$1.3B

#7 Jeff Bezos: -$2.6B

#9 Larry Ellison: -$1.6B

#10 Mark Zuckerberg: -$1.7B


All those people lost wealth due to the stock market going down, the losses were not realized losses unlike Trump who had real hard losses. Of course a Trump-Tard wouldn't understand the difference.

Most likely it's lower income people who don't have any investments so they don't know how it works.

He didn't just lose a billion dollars. He had expenses or capital losses associated with his income producing properties that exceeded the income those properties produced that year by a billion dollars. Most of those "losses" are depreciation costs and mortgage interest expenses. Those two can easily exceed income generated (rent or cap gains from a sale) causing an overall loss which means no tax. Most people don't own or run income producing properties and are ignorant of these rules. If I were him, I wouldn't release my returns to a bunch of ignoramouses who don't know about running rental properties, either, and expect any sort of fair treatment.

Having 4 bankruptcies is just how you run rental properties, $900M loss is no biggie. I'm sure well run REITs have similar losses.

If you own $2 billion worth of commercial real estate, one year's depreciation could be at least $70 million. Add mortgage interest, insurance, utilities, maintenance, management...on and on and you could have up to $150 million in total expenses. If the income was only $50 million due to a shitty rental market, the loss is $100 million. No tax there and that loss gets carried over to the next year and placed against any of that year's income. The losses can keep adding up as well over years so that in a single tax year it could be possible to have $1 billion accumulated losses which *could* take the next 10 years to work out from the carryover losses, in the meantime not paying any tax on income generated by the property or properties. Tax lawyers and accountants know this. See any backing up the charges?

The people OP referenced all have businesses, employ thousands of people and create actual wealth without going bankrupt and losing all their investors money.



For example, Berkshire Hathaway has over 300,000 employees and has generated positive returns for millions of Americans.

Buffet has filed for bankruptcy 4 times.
