Welcome to Fairfax Underground, a project site designed to improve communication among residents of Fairfax County, VA. Feel free to post anything Northern Virginia residents would find interesting.
FFXU = aSmallWorld?
Posted by: BS Observer ()
Date: August 24, 2009 02:10AM

For those that have never heard of it, aSmallWorld is a private online community made of very exclusive members. Almost all the members are high profile socialites and business people.

FFXU is similar to aSmallWorld, albeit without the privacy. Let's see what we've got for a member base!

1. Lawyers that have enormous annual bonuses, some senior partner at their firm.

2. Managers in various fields that have whole departments under them.

3. Self employed consultants that bring home astronomical incomes.

4. Graduates of top universities such as Penn State and Carnegie Mellon.

5. Skilled musicians that get all the popular venue spots.

6. Residents of private/gated residential districts.

7. People with access to all of DC's hottest clubs.

If you are new to Fairfax Underground, know who you are dealing with: Everyone here is highly successful, in charge of their own career, and has a great sex life.

You might ask yourself "If these people are so wealthy and career minded, why spend so much time on the internet?" The answer is simple, they are networking, sharing with each other their vast knowledge and success stories.

To the new reader: You are truly lucky to be amongst these people.

meh.

people who post on this site are probably not Brad and Angelina. But you would be making a fool out of yourself to assume there are not a few who make pretty decent money working in this area.

I make a fairly decent salary. From what I can tell Gravis and MrMephisto and TheMeeper and Wash-don'tknowhowtospellhisname and a lot of the other regulars are employed with the same kinds of skills that pay pretty well.

Just look at the median income level for Fairfax County.

People earning below or just at the median income level are wage slaves. People who earn above the median income have an enormous amount of freedom in their jobs. They can manage their work load and spend some time posting on this site, or viewing youtube or liveleak, or whatever, without it affecting their jobs.

If you work for Best Buy, you are required to sell shit while you are on the clock. You only get one break during your eight hour shift.

So the more income you make, the more freedom you have to post on the internet during the work day. Only wage slaves stay busy during the day. I'll remember that the next time I visit the doctor or dentist. "What? You don't have enough time to fuck off on the internet? What a loser."

"Just look at the median income level for Fairfax County."

Right, just because you live in Fairfax makes you wealthy, just like living in Los Angeles makes you a writer or an actor.

In the infamous words of Fruppie, you're stupid.

You need to watch Travel Channel on any given saturday or sunday.

Cooking on a grill is not a "barbecue".

There's all sorts of "barbecue", North Carolina, Georgia, Mississipi, Louisiana, Alabama, Texas, and so on.

I still barbecue ribs or some chicken legs and wings on my grill whenever I feel like it, but I know that the "true" barbecue is either this or that, or only in this state or that.

I'll eat the food I cook, and others can debate about whether it should be called this or that.

Possibly me. But, as I have said before, if you think an income in the mid six-figures is "astronomical" for this area, it says more about you than it does me.

Some do. Some don't.

Because when your job doesn't involve selling Xbox 360s at Best Buy, you actually have time at your desk job to do these things.

LOL. I'm an average dude, who went to a VA state college, making an average living, living in an average subdivision. I don't play a musical instrument and I'm pretty antisocial, so I don't go out much. I couldn't be farther from what you describe there.

A lot of this ire is aimed at me by a troll who is incensed that someone on this forum actually makes more money than he does. He constantly claims not to believe me, but when he thinks he has a tip on my real ID, he looks up someone who fits my description for income, occupation and type of residence. It's pretty funny, really. I enjoy watching this idiot make an ass out of himself.

LOL, it's funny if people really think that it's a "top university". I mean, I love the place, but I wouldn't put it in the same boat as an ivy league school or a place like UVA. It's just a good school that's nationally recognized.

Not that Penn State isn't a great school, but I would never claim it is "a top university" like MIT, Stanford or an Ivy League school. I was just busting on the OP's lack of understanding of the college universe. Now, if I were a computer major at Strayer Online University, that would be different.

I'd rank it as a top university if you're looking for the whole "big-school crazy-party college town" environment. It's one of the best in that respect.

Princeton Review calls Penn State one of the best universities in the northeast.

U.S. News & World Report America's Best Colleges 2009 lists Penn State as number 15 in the top 50 public universities.

Newsweek puts Penn State in the top 50 global universities.

Business and Law School are constantly mentioned as being top quality programs.

Add these together: Penn State is a top university. Not as elite as an Ivy League school, but is internationally recognized.

If you all you did was party while you were there, you obviously majored in history or women's studies. If you went to Smeal College, you would not think it was a party school.

FYI- I got my BS in Econ from Smeal. It was actually a challenging program, I just don't rank PSU (as a whole) up there with places like MIT or Princeton.

I'm not bashing people who make $50K. I used to make $50K with a family of three as well. I just don't understand why Alias and Ken Doll (maybe they are one in the same, I don't know), get so angry that I am at a point in my life where I am doing well financially. (Oh, and I have a great relationship with my wife and kids, as well).

I know you are not bashing, WTL. I just think people in this area place too much emphasis on income. 50k is not alot of money around here, but we are surviving. All I was trying to say is that there is more to life than money.

Getting back to the OP; I am completely turned off by the term "socialite." I dont know why it makes me sick, but it does. I know I could have bumped up my annual pay by 20k, by going to the private sector. I work for the government for the security and the benefits. However, I know if my income hasnt doubled in ten-fifteen years, I am doing something wrong.

I wear my poverity like a crown. If I did make bank, I would not associate with the Alpha wannabes at aSmallWorld.

In my case, I was in a secure job as well. I hit 30 and looked around and saw a lot of 40- and 50-somethings around me who felt trapped and who were "waiting out the clock" to reach retirement age. I didn't want to be like that.

In some respects I gave up security. At the same time, I placed my security in my own hands versus relying on middle management types who didn't know what the fuck they were doing to decide what my day would be like every day. It is a trade off.

As for the Alpha wannabes, I'm not a particularly materialistic person. My neighbors probably have no idea that I make the kind of money that I do. I, too, don't associate with Alpha wannabes.

Its listed as #47 on the list of major US Universities - below UC Irvine and UC Santa Barbara - considered by Californians to be safety schools...

Most of the doctors I know actually do have quite a lot of free time. Even the surgeons might spend 10 to 12 hours in surgery, but they only do that on wednesdays and thursdays. They only rarely do emergency surgeries on other days, especially not on fridays, and never on saturday or sunday.

ER docs are excepted, because they wanted to live the TV image of action docs in fast-paced dramas with lots of witty banter and they even hear a soundtrack of dramatic music in thier heads while they rescue the critical patient who needs to be intubated stat. The normal docs and surgeons get past residency and work towards regular 9-5 office hours and golfing on fridays.

You obviously don't know too many professionals. Not too many people climb the ladder only to do MORE work. They climb the ladder in order to DO LESS and MAKE MORE.

If you can't grasp that, good luck getting very far in this world.

I didn't say that you were wealthy for living in fairfax county. I said that the median income is high here, and that if you live above the median income, you most likely have a job where you can manage your time and are not required to sit at a window or a cash register for 8 hours a day. You have the freedom to manage your time and complete your tasks, projects, etc at your will, and thus, can choose to occupy the free time you have at the office by virtue of proper time management of your tasks, doing whatever you want.

Do you think that the real estate agent making around 500,000 to a million a year doesn't have about 40% of his day free? Do you think that the computer programmer is chained to his desk with a keystroke counter reporting every lapse in production to his boss, who promptly yells at him to keep typing?

Naive. Stupid.

> In the infamous words of Fruppie, you're stupid.

Thanks fruppie. I'm stupid. But I didn't get somebody's words all twisted around and confused.

Yes. I have been on other forums frequented by lawyers and engineers, and they post many times throughout the day.

Yes. Hence the term "wage slave." If you are busting your ass for someone else hoping that they will recognize your efforts and give you a big promotion out of some sense of obligation, you are kidding yourself. People...especially business people....operate out of a sense of self-interest. Everyone is replaceable, including you...no matter how good a job you do...and for less money.

I'll
> remember that the next time I visit the doctor or

It depends on the type of doctor. And, doctors and dentist don't make the kind of money they used to. Many don't even clear six figures anymore because of our "great private insurance industry."

No. Because Fairfax County has one of the highest median incomes in the country, so more people here make six-figure incomes.

And unfortunately, the people think that shit actually matters.

Alias-

Have you ever worked for a large corporation? Where are those senior management people all of the time? "Working" by playing golf? In their offices with their doors closed?

I worked for a company once that lost a big account because the CEO picked up a prostitute and blow and skipped an important meeting. Did the guy get shit-canned? No. When layoffs came around, he was the one handing out pink slips to "the wage slaves."

fairfax has an abundance of people with higher than average intelligence, which is far more important than money.

Higher than average intelligence is usually tied to higher incomes.

I've noticed that smart people turn into really really dumb people after they make a lot of money. In the building I janitor for, I used to be cool with a lot of entry-level "wage slaves" that turned into roaring pricks as soon as they moved up their ladder.

In the world I see, we burn these self-righteous assholes alive on a big pile of money.

Maybe I am coming off like a dick. I am certainly not trying to. My point is, I spent many years being a "wage slave." Nobody you work for is going to do SHIT for you. If you are able to do your own thing and make a good income at it, I highly recommend it.

As for the whole "I'm not rich but I'm rich in love stuff." The fact is my marriage and family life is much calmer now than when I was constantly freaking out about paying for my kids' clothes or about some bullshit thing my asshole boss wanted me to do on a Sunday or on my kid's birthday. I actually spend more time with my kids now because I have the freedom to do so.

WTL, isn't it true;

mo money, mo problems?

that was a serious question.

Yeah, I stress about paying bills. But everyone I know is in debt. The more money you make, the more shit you buy, the more bills you have.

It depends on what lifestyle you choose. I don't drive around in a $70K Mercedes or put my kids in expensive schools or try to compete with neighbors at the country club. I put a lot of my money away through investments, etc. And I also hate debt. I would rather have a cushion of liquidity than a mega house.
