It sort of happens here, too.

The beauty of the american system is that everyone still believes they actually are thinking for themselves because we have two parties, so as long as you can disagree with the other party, you must be thinking for yourself.

There is no place on this planet where people are truly thinking for themselves, without undue influence and without distorted information to work with.

If you watched the video, the guy is in so much shock at the moment that he obviously isn't suffering in any way. He might be a little bit confused, but he isn't crying out in pain, and that shit can be fixed.

He'll be shitting and pissing into a bag for the rest of his life, but I'm sure if you ask him a year after that accident if he wished he were dead, he'd most likely say he was glad he survived that accident.

Nobody wants to check out early. Some people choose to when everything seems desperate or whatever. But most people who fail to commit suicide eventually realize they were choosing a permanent solution to a temporary problem.

I've been in rehab hospitals and I've seen people who are nothing but torsos, and I've seen people only able to navigate the world by moving their head or blowing into a straw. They all want to live.

You would be surprised at how quickly your thinking would change if you were put in that situation.

It's all relative. I used to think the same way as you, that I would never want to be confined to a wheelchair, or not have the use of my arms and legs.

But I've recently spent months at NRH with my mother, and I've seen just about everything, and I realize now that when we are put in that horrible situation, our attitudes will change. The desire to be alive is much greater than the desire to have the full use of arms and legs.

When faced with the prospect of never using your arms and legs again, head on, your outlook changes. You are forced to focus on how you can live with what you've got.

Think about Christopher Reeve. He didn't want to die, he fought hard and even started a foundation to try to repair spinal cord injuries. Perhaps his pursuit of all kinds of possible solutions ultimately did him in, but it wasn't a pursuit of death, it was a pursuit of being whole again.

Most people are not suicidal.

No, from my observations, people who go through life changing events such as losing the use of some or all limbs, or the outright loss of those limbs, do not wish they were dead. Maybe some do, at first, but they quickly reboot and find a new perspective, based on their current circumstances, and they are not about to cash in just because their life is not what it used to be.

Well, when you are completely fucked and powerless to help yourself, it often helps when someone is just willing to be there with you. The guy is dying. It is probably worse to die alone and even worse than that to die alone with a group of gawking spectators.

That's provincial thinking. If this was in the philipines, or singapore, or even indonesia, the medical care is probably equal to the U.S. If it was in Japan, or China, or Taiwan, it might even exceed the U.S.

I mean, we are ranked 39th in the world, overall, for medical care.

I believe this is supposed to have happened in Vietnam. I'm pretty sure they have pretty good hospitals over there.

This is true. A friend of mine had a very serious allergic reaction in China and we took him to a hospital in a rather large city in Sichuan. It reminded me of a USN hospital during the Vietnam era.

I would like to think that I would do the right thing in that situation. But, seriously, I would be so fucking freaked out by that sight, I might have a similar reaction of not knowing what to do.
