How do you lose a ship?
Posted by: eesh ()

Apparently this merchant ship was hijacked by pirates, but no one has been able to locate it since July 30th....

My question is, with all the technology out there, GPS, imagery, beacons, etc. how does a ship just vanish?

Sink it in 12,000 feet of water.

in order to really vanish a ship you would have to

a) not have any of those technologies aboard.
b) sink the ship.
c) take the ship out of the area they are searching/expecting it to be in.
d) it was hijacked by David Copperfield

Sounds to me like the Russians are behind it and don't want the ship to be found. Methinks there is something besides timber on it and it was headed somewhere it shouldn't have been.

Speaking of the timber, if the ship was sunk, a lot of debris would be floating, but none has been found. It's a modern ship, so there has to be some beacon or other way to track it.

has anyone consulted David Copperfield yet? He is an expert in this field.

You don't think the Russians would be selling nuclear material to the Iranians? The Kremlin is full of corrupt fucks, especially Vlad "The Poisoner" Putin.

you do make a good point but if that were the case, do you think it would have been reported to the media in the first place? also, if that were the case, they would have retaken the ship by using army personnel and brought it back to land.

im just saying, if you look for conspiracies everywhere, you will see conspiracies everywhere.

I'm just saying that there are a lot of weird "facts" surrounding this case. The ship is boarded by pirates, who leave 12 hours later? It is boarded by pirates in a part of the sea where there are no pirates? It has a cargo that is rumored to be secret and very valuable? The manifest is fucked up and confusing, as if on purpose? It is a Malta ship with an all-Russian crew? The Russian Navy is looking for it, but the Russian Navy can't find it?

It all sounds like plausible deniability to me. I think something is on that ship that shouldn't be and it is headed to a destination it shouldn't be and the Russians have come up with a cover story to hide that fact. Putin's Swiss bank account probably has $1 billion in Iranian-backed Euros.

Dick Cheney must have hidden it.

Come on, read the article:

Quote

...
Earlier in its voyage, the ship reported being boarded by up to 10 armed men as it sailed through the Baltic Sea on 24 July, but said the intruders left the vessel on an inflatable boat after 12 hours.

Malta's maritime authority said it had "not approached the Straits of Gibraltar, which indicates that the ship headed out in the Atlantic Ocean".
...

Who verified they left?

I say scuttled in deep water at this point after they took what they wanted off it.

It's more likely that it is conventional arms being sold to someone on an embargo list. Maybe even to the "pirates" for all we know.

Discovery[edit]
On August 14 the ship was reportedly sighted off Cape Verde. The Russian ambassador to Cape Verde stated that a Russian frigate was heading to the area but that the detection had not been confirmed. Meanwhile, an unnamed military official stated that the ship had indeed been found but that the location was being kept secret from the public for security reasons, without clarifying the statement further.[20]

The Defense Minister of Russia, Anatoliy Serdyukov, announced on August 17 that the ship had been found and seized off the Cape Verde Islands. All 15 crew members were said to be alive and well; they were transferred to the Ladnyy, a Krivak-class frigate, for questioning. At that time no additional details were given. Dmitry Rogozin, Russia's ambassador to NATO mentioned to the press on August 17 that false information was deliberately supplied to the media in order to keep Russian plans secret.[21]

After the ship's seizure the Malta Maritime Authority stated that the security committee—composed of Maltese, Finnish and Swedish authorities—were aware of the ship's location at all times, but withheld the information to protect the crew.[22]
