I saw a preview for the movie a few months back when I took my kids to see a movie. In the row in front of us were a bunch of 40-something rednecks who started high-fiving each other when the GI Joe preview came on. Gives you an idea of the demographic they are aiming for.

That's stupid.

So when a group of rednecks likes the movie, that must mean everyone that watches it is a redneck. Using your logic, if a group of butch lesbians likes Terminator, that must mean the movie was aimed at butch lesbians.

Yeah, and their surprise, the G.I. Joe movie is nothing like "A Real American Hero" in this version.

Cobra Commander doesn't wear a mask, the Baroness isn't Russian, and the Joes wear futuristic exo-suits that turn them into Spider-Man. On top of it all, this abominable shit-fest is presented in the classic "Wise-Cracking Black Guy Meets Straight-Laced White Guys" format.

I cannot see how anyone, at any point, could have woken up and thought, "Man, I can't wait to go see GI Joe today."

There aren't enough butch lesbians to make a movie like Terminator economically feasible. As for rednecks, just look at the red states. At least as of 2008, movie makers would have 47% of the country.

Movie makers are so fucking lazy these days. Every once in a while you get a Bourne Identity. Most of the time, though, it's this lazy-ass phone-it-in formula bullshit.

What's funny is that I was at Target yesterday and passed by the GI Joe toys. Since I grew up with GI Joe, I started to read the back of the box descriptions for the action figures. Suffice it to say that they changed enough about the people that I could tell that the movie would suck and be nothing like the GI Joe I know. Cobra Commander has "severe burn damage" so that's why he wears a mask, Destro wears a mask, not because it's a family heritage mask, but because he uses "nanites to repair burn damage that turn his skin to metal". Fucking Zartan uses "nanite technology" to do his disguises. I can only imagine how much they bastardized the Snake Eyes/Storm Shadow background.

And what the fuck are those Exo-suits? When where those in GI Joe?

Sorry for the detour into geek land...

All I want to know is, does GI Joe's arm fall off when you pull hard enough on it and do the Kung Fu grip fingers break off after a couple of months? That's the only way this movie could be true to my childhood memories.

Or can GI Joe survive being strapped to a large bottle rocket or an M-80? Summer staples of my youth.

Back in the 70s GI Joe's arms could be detached and re-attached.

The 70s were a dark time for action figures....

So here is my GI Joe story. For years, I pleaded with my parents to get me a GI Joe. My parents, who grew up during the Great Depression, didn't understand the concept of an "action figure." I found out years later from my siblings that my parents considered GI Joe to be "a doll" and were afraid if they bought one for me it would make me gay.

Anyway, my sister finally convinced them to get me one. So, on my birthday, I ripped into the wrapping to find the following....

I read that because of the negative publicity from the Vietnam War, GI JOE was made more of an outdoorsman theme rather than military during the 70s.

Note the Billy Mays look-a-like from WashingTone's first pic.

That's kind of an interesting point. GI Joe's heyday was during Vietnam and its aftermath.

I saw it on Friday and liked it. The movie was pre-selected by a group of friends, and wouldn't have been something I would have picked out to see. I wasn't expecting much, but walked out pleasantly surprised.

Being vague is almost as fun as that other thing.

You certainly can't buy a ticket to GI Joe and expect to see Citizen Kane. It's clearly a "I'm ready to accept that I'm about to throw 2 hours of my life away" DVD movie.
