Of course Trump will raise money for the general election. Some donors are certainly already lined up. Though Trump won't need as much to get out his vote as Clinton will need.

Clinton spent far more than she expected on the surprisingly difficult primary competitions against Sanders.

Chart below as of April. Trump was just about done spending on the primaries by early May. Clinton still had one or two months to go.

Clinton will spend over a billion dollars between the convention and November, and will take loans if needed to do so. More than just advertising; she relies on expensive focus groups and polling, paid demonstrators, and a massive campaign staff who will not work for free no matter how dedicated they are to her election.

The rented jet, buses, cars, and hotels are also very expensive. The numbers will lie on this a bit, as Trump can give himself in-kind donations of these items.

The cost of becoming the president is over $1 billion. In 2012 Obama's campaign spent nearly $750 million electing him, and over $400 million was spent on top of that by other organizations wanting him elected.

Trump has to start passing the hat, and quickly, to get that kind of cheddar together over the next six months.

The truth is, though, he's not going to be able to raise the money. Establishment Republican donors don't like him, don't trust him, and don't think he's going to be able to win, so they're going to keep their wallets closed on this go-round.

In contrast, Hillary, by invoking boogeyman Trump, is going to raise huge piles of cash. The Trump name is going to be very profitable in 2016, just not for Donald J. Trump.

I predict Hillary out-raises Trump by at least 3-1, and would not be surprised if it's 4-1 or even 5-1. Trump's campaign is going to spend about $250-300 million, and Hillary is going to spend about $850-900 million.

Secondly, just because Trump is rich* doesn't mean he has cash on hand. Let me explain this to you.

Like most rich people, most of Trump's money is tied up in illiquid assets. This means that it would take a lot of time to sell them, unless he wants to take a huge loss on the value of those assets.

I believe Trump has already used up most of his cash and easily liquid assets lending money to his campaign. That well's been pumped dry, so he needs to find more money somewhere else.

*Regardless of whether he's worth 10 billion, 4 billion or even a measly few hundred million dollars, that still counts as really fucking rich.
