It looks like the Obama family has chosen a neighborhood to live in after Barack’s second term is over — welcome to Kalorama, Mr. President!
The National Journal is reporting the Obamas intend to rent a home in Kalorama, a tony neighborhood in Northwest D.C. located between Massachusetts and Connecticut avenues popular with the diplomatic corps. The publication said the White House is not disclosing the exact house.
The news comes amid increasing speculation about where the first family would land after several reports in the last year made it clear they would remain in D.C., a rarity for a former president. Barack and Michelle Obama first raised the likelihood during a 2013 interview with ABC’s Barbara Walters, saying they didn’t want to drag their youngest daughter, Sasha, out of high school when his term ends on Jan. 20, 2017.
Sasha attends Sidwell Friends School, a roughly 10-minute drive from Kalorama, and the neighborhood is filled with large, historic single-family homes. The neighborhood, just steps away from Rock Creek Park, is also located near several embassies and ambassador's residences.
There is presidential precedent for Kalorama, too. Not only is it home to high-level government officials and Cabinet members, the neighborhood also housed former presidents William Howard Taft and Woodrow Wilson.
Realtors we have spoken to said the Obamas will probably need to find something with plenty of privacy and with some distance from other buildings that could overlook the property while having plenty of space for additional security.
Will President Obama be just as frustrated as the rest of us waiting in line for a salad at sweetgreen? How will he deal with Beltway traffic or the continuing Metro problems? Will Obama subscribe to the Washington Business Journal? Who knows? But let's find out together.
So time to fire up the Internet and start looking at what’s available for rent in the area. If you find anything that you think fits the bill, send it along.
