What do birds do when it rains?

Recently I installed a bird feeder outside my bedroom window. It is so wonderful the diversity of our feathered friends that frequent the feeder! I love it. My question that I haven't found an answer to is this: What do the little birdies do when it rains? I mean, do they stay put in the trees that they find themselves in, perhaps shivering on a branch until the rain stops? Also, at night, do they spend the darkness grasping onto a tree branch while sleeping? If so, how do they keep tension in their toes so as not to lose their grip and fall?
Anyone have knowledge in this area?

Birds generally tuck themselves down under eaves and in thick shrubs or on trees' inner branches. After it rains, if you go outside you can often hear little birds chirping from inside bushes.

birds feathers have an oil that repels water, to a certain point. birds were meant for trees so they just hang on with out thinking about it, like breathing. unless they are dying they wont fall out. and going off of what margie said they can since a storm before it hits so they seek shelter accordingly.

Don't some birds build nests? I'm not sure if all do, or if it's only for laying eggs and raising newborns until they can fly, or if some birds live in nests.
As far as the rain, I think they just get wet. Wild animals don't seem to be bothered by rain as much as humans and domesticated animals.
Though some birds are smart enough to find shelters like rock crevices, holes in a house's eaves, inside a barn, or birdhouses, etc.

i concur. i think every bird builds a nest. i've even seen juvenile birds practicing their nest skills. mostly sparrows. im fairly certain all birds do, even if they live on the ground. for example ducks build nests on land.
