Proper Door usage

Question: What is the proper door exit/entry usage etiquette? In America, we drive on the right side of the road, so it stands to reason that at a set of double doors, you would go through the door on the right. However, I see people just make a complete bottleneck clusterfuck at places like the gym, restaurants, or the mall because everybody is going in/out every which way. For the record, I use the right side door. Maybe I'm wrong and if so, please tell me.

I can't tell you how may times I'm going into Lifetime "Ask about our locker room discounted items" Fitness and I'm going through the right side door and some joker would rather wait for me to come through than go through his right side door (my left). Then you do that little foot shuffle dance to your left or right until you figure out who is going where.

Also, I'm noticing more and more stores are putting their automatic entries on the left side of sets of doors. It just seems counter-intuitive.

My favorite is the revolving door shuffle.

This is when two people enter simultaneously at opposite ends while they try to time the door speed. One person always gets the heel of their shoe clipped.

LOL -- I know exactly what you're talking about. That "middle ground/waiting/whatever" area between the two sets of doors at Lifetime is like a fucking DMZ.

I think there are just some people who were put on this planet to be a constant source of frustration, delay and confusion.

Common sense would mandate using the door to your right.

But then again, anyone with even a little common sense would see you going through the one door and would choose the other door rather than stopping and waiting. So anyone whose brain works so slowly that they cannot make that split second, on the fly decision isn't going to be able to comprehend any conventions or "rules" about using the proper door.

They even do it on sidewalks and in hallways of buildings, also.

i dont think there is a proper door unless it is marked with an exit or entrance sign. they both open. so just go to which ever one is not occupied. go with the flow

But the OP mentioned the problem of dumbshits who don't follow even that basic rule or convention.

Yes, use whatever door is the most convenient unless marked as "In" and "Out", but if someone is walking up to the door from the outside at the same time that you are walking up to it from the inside, you should take the door on your right, and he should take the door on his right. It's just a convention that avoids problems, speeds things along and prevents problems.

Obviously there are people who just don't give a shit, or are too slow to figure things out. I feel the same way about riding escalators (and even walking up stairs, or down halls or on sidewalks) -- if you want to ride the escalator without walking up the steps, stand to the right, let the people who actually have things to do and aren't just enjoying the white noise that occurs in the numb-brained mind, pass you!

Unless the doors are marked exclusively for such, I use whatever door I want, unless of course there is a crowd (Then I normally use the Right Side).

That's what I meant - if there is a line of people coming and going and there aren't separate sets of doors clearly marked "Enter" and "Exit" (like a grocery store or Target).

Why is it impolite to knock over some person who is displaying anti-social behavior by blocking a passageway, but not impolite to be the anti-social nitwit who is blocking the passageway?

Believe me, I've said "excuse me" so many times on those walkways, only to have the person look at me like they don't understand english (or maybe they don't understand common courtesy)

Escalators, moving walkways, it's all the same. There are some asswads who just don't understand that you need to be considerate of others.

On a slightly related note, what's with the idiots who are standing OUTSIDE the elevator (or the subway door) and get right into the doorway before the doors open, and will not let the people on the car get the fuck off? I always stand to the side of elevators and subway cars and let people off before I get on. It just seems like common sense -- if I stand in the doorway, they can't get out, and thus I can't get in. If I want to make it easy for myself, I let them off and then I can get on.

Why is it that so many people struggle against common sense and do all these anti-social things?
