Democracies end when they are too democratic.

"...late-stage capitalism is creating a righteous, revolutionary anger that late-stage democracy has precious little ability to moderate or constrain — and has actually helped exacerbate."

Interesting article for those that contemplate Plato and Democracy.

The US form of government is a republic, not a democracy.

Learn the difference.

Plato certainly warned of the dangers of "mob rule" but as "Plato sez" points out, we aren't a democracy, we are a multi-party republic.

Our bi-cameral federal legislature, three-branch federal government structure, state control over voting, and electoral college are all designed to thwart democratic (AKA, mob) rule.

Whether we are a republic isn't in question. How democratic we have become and susceptiple we are to tyranny as a result is in question. I personally think we are much more resilient than an idiot named Donald Trump becoming prez but who knows.

You think you are smart but you are not smart. You didnt read the article and dont understand the statement. In the article it discusses the fact that we were established as a Republic precisely because of the limitations of Democracy set forth in The Republic. The article argues that we are becoming more of a democracy and losing some of the checks provided for by the Republic. So try thinking or reading before you try to come across as smart.

Thanks to Jefferson and Jackson we are a democratic republic as opposed to an aristocratic republic...and we functioned rather well as a democratic republic for a long period of time.

Awww! You had a good argument, with valid points. Why did you have to ruin it by insulting the other person's intelligence?

democracies end when despots use police to stay in power, they give liberty but take away justice and freedom (poor but unbothered by gov unless you have money they want)

"Democracy in America", DeToqueville

a French scientist who wandered the great new land to survey the effects of INDIRECT democratic politics (which is odd because france at the same time had about the same politics, under new napoleanic freedom laws; code de civil, and the government: which was also not a direct democracy)
