African American police officers have brought a lawsuit against their department over Domelights, a message board run by white Philadelphia officers.
Lawsuit claims admins, who are white police officers, allow racist language to be used. One post describes black kids as "monkey faces."

If the police dept. or taxes dollars were used to fund the forum in any way, then they should be held liable. Similarly, if police were paid to administer the site while on duty, then they should be held to a higher standard.

Yes, they are held to a high standard as are teachers, unfortunately.
I'll agree that if they were being paid to be site administrators or even on duty, then they are not acting in the capacity of an everyday citizen and therefore shouldn't be protected by free speech.

If anything, the officers could get in trouble for abusing department computers. Hopefully this lawsuit will get dismissed and not set a precedent. Can you imagine everyone suing each other over something said on the internet?

If teachers can get fired and lose their careers because they showed their tits on MySpace (which has nothing to do with teaching), then cops can certainly be fired for doing what one would be charged with a hate crime with had they printed the message and nailed it to the door of a majority-black church, or left it next to the locker of a black officer.

Add to that the increasing tendency to tie someone's personal behavior to their employer, and the fact that most sites like this are run by, and frequented by, regular individuals (present company excluded) with day jobs (some of you), and you will start to see more and more outing of individuals' private behavior to their employers. Many employers have a "don't do anything that embarrasses the company" clause in their employment agreements, which makes it remarkably easy to get a person fired for being a pseudo-anon asshole on the internet. REMARKABLY EASY. I have seen it happen. You can even do it anonymously. Bundle up the offensive posts, the evidence linking the account to a true name, and send it anon to the HR department where they work. They'll get called in and asked to explain it, and chances are they'll be blindsided and cave immediately, and be shown the door.
