how do i use my duel citizenship?

I recently picked up a duel citizenship to Republic of Ireland and have two passports now (my native USA and R.O.I.). Is it true that one with an EU passport can live and work in any fellow EU country? How does this work? Does it depend on country?

When I'm leaving/entering America or other countries, which passport do i show who at customs? I think I MUST show USA passport when entering/leaving USA, but when i get to Ireland or wherever in the EU and want to stay for more than 90 days, what do I do with the passport? When I come back to USA and they see that I've been gone for 2-3 years, won't that be suspicious?

Any help on how to effectively use duel citizenship properly would be great! thanks

Grandparents were born there and came to USA when the Brits were layin the smack down.

it was a pain in the ass, but i got it. I want to move to Europe (as is my right now), but not sure how to do it w/o somehow screwing myself in a way I can not percieve right now. Do I show the Irish customs official my Irish passport? He's going to want to know where I came from. Do some countries have different rules on living/working there? I don't want to end up in a jail for omitting my duelie status...i want to do things right

Congratulations on becoming Irish - I too have two passports - the best bet if you want to live and work in another country is to contact that country's embassy Stateside and ask what the protocols are. Another avenue is to contact the Irish embassy and ask them how to go about it. I know that if you lived in England and wanted to work in France there are several forms to complete but it's rather seamless. So check with the embassy that's your best starting spot.

"When I'm leaving/entering America or other countries, which passport do i show who at customs? It depends on where the round-trip ticket originates. If you're flying into and back to the US use your American passport. If you're flying into and back into Ireland use your Irish passport. For any inbetween countries use whatever you fancy if you fly within Europe and your return ticket is to Ireland stick w your Irish passport. If you want to go to Cuba use your Irish passport =). They won't be suspicious of you being abroad as long as you've paid any applicable taxes. There are loads of American expatriates especially in London so you'll be just fine.

Good luck and enjoy your travels!
