Now vs 70s: Is current economic situation very close?

I'm a millenial and trying to figure out where we are heading.

I've read that the 70s as far as the economy was absolutely horrible. Unemployment was high, oil shocks, multiple recessions. I've seen television intros and first episodes of that time period (Laverne & Shirley, One Day At a Time, Stanford and Son) and they are so fucking different from what is depicted now. Young adult women working in a beer factory is considered middle class, entire families living in apartments was more "normal" back then.

People have said that this young generation is the first in American history to be worst off than the previous one. Is it because it's cyclical or structural changes?

In the 70s people were struggling to afford gas for their car.

Today, people struggle to afford a bigger data plan for their smartphone.

TV sitcoms aren't indicative of reality any more than reality shows are of today's.

Simultaneous with the oil shock, the 70's was the beginning of de-industrialization in the US. Manufacturing jobs were going to Japan and Germany in a conscious effort to build up the economies in Japan and Western Europe.

Fairfax is recession proof so none of that matters. No shortage of high paying jobs around here.

The condition of the economy depends on your location, more than ever. People who acquire the skills and go where the high paying jobs are located are doing great.
