Thoughts On The Universe
Posted by: Tin Whiskers ()
Date: May 13, 2009 11:49AM

Hark
While I croon a verse
In praise
Of the universe.
The universe is quite good-sized,
And is, I think, well organized,
Containing as it does, a slew
Of stars and planets. Comets too
Occasionally whiz about
And dodge and circle in and out
Among the clustered nebulae.
They scare the dickens out of me,
But I suppose they know their stuff
And are expert and quick enough
To keep from bumping or colliding
With other worlds. But I'm residing
At present on the planet, earth,
And it does not arouse my mirth
To see these reckless comets fly
Around as if they owned the sky.
It's much too dangerous in a crowd,
And really shouldn't be allowed.
Yet tho there's nothing to prevent
Bad manners in the firmament,
The heavenly bodies, generally,
Are well behaved and courteously
Avoid all quarrels and disputes-
Tho when they have them, they are beauts.
As to the universe's size,
It's rather large than otherwise,
Containing stars and galaxies
And satellites of all degrees.
And some are dim and some are bright,
But all are lighted up at night,-
Mostly along the Milky Way-
A quite remarkable display.
Some scientific fellows hope
By peering thru a telescope
To chart the heavens and name each star
Of all the billions that there are.
More sensible I think it is
Just to sit back and let them whiz
Along on their accustomed track
Around and round the zodiac.
For since they are not bothering me
I think it's best to let them be.
And that is all I have to say
About the universe today.

endless rain into a paper cup
They slither while they pass
They slip away across the universe
Pools of sorrow waves of joy

Possessing and caressing me

Jai guru deva om
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world

Images of broken light which
dance before me like a million eyes
That call me on and on across the universe
Thoughts meander like a
restless wind inside a letter box
they tumble blindly as
they make their way across the universe

Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world

Sounds of laughter shades of life

George did write "I Me Mine", one of my favorite Beatles songs. It's also the song immediately following Across The Universe.

George wasn't the crass commercial whore like Paul McCartney and had infinitely more talent than Ringo. He was a hugely influential guitarist in the 70s. I say, George is alright by me.

Oh, I'm not knocking his talents, he wrote some great stuff...

Here Comes The Sun
While My Guitar Gently Weeps
Taxman
Something
Savoy Truffle
I Want To Tell You

All great stuff. He was also responsible for introducing Eastern-influenced music into some of The Beatles works, which was great.

I just refuse to acknowledge someone as "cool" if they were in The Traveling Wilburys.

Seriously. Was Joe Pesci's work in Good Fellas or Raging Bull any less great because he went on to star in Moonwalker with Michael Jackson?

So the quality of the music doesn't matter, just whether the band is perceived as "cool". Fascinating. Of course one person's "cool" is another person's joke.

This may be the reason Del Shannon blew his brains out when faced with the prospect of joining the Traveling Wilburys.

Tweeter and the monkey man were hard up for cash
They stayed up all night selling cocaine and hash
To an undercover cop who had a sister named jan
For reasons unexplained she loved the monkey
man

Tweeter was a boy scout before she went to Vietnam

And found out the hard way nobody gives a damn
They knew that they found freedom just across the jersey line
So they hopped into a stolen car took highway 99

And the walls came down all the way to hell
Never saw them when theyre standing
Never saw them when they fell

The undercover cop never liked the monkey man
Even back in childhood he wanted to see him in the can
Jan got married at fourteen to a rackateer named bill
She made secret calls to the monkey man from a mansion on the hill

It was out on thunder road - tweeter at the wheel
They crashed into paradise - they could hear them tires squeal
The undercover cop pulled up and said everyone of yous a liar
If you dont surrender now its gonna go down to the wire

An ambulance rolled up - a state trooper close behind
Tweeter took his gun away and messed up his mind
The undercover cop was left tied up to a tree
Near the souvenir stand by the old abandoned factory

Next day the undercover cop was hot in pursuit
He was taking the whole thing personal
He didnt care about the loot
Jan had told him many times it was you to me who taught
In jersey anythings legal as long as you dont get caught

Someplace by Rahway prison they ran out of gas
The undercover cop had cornered them said boy, you didnt
Think that this could last
Jan jumped out of bed said theres someplace I gotta go
She took a gun out of the drawer and said its best if you dont know

The undercover cop was found face down in a field
The monkey man was on the river bridge using tweeter as a shield
Jan said to the monkey man Im not fooled by tweeters curl
I knew him long before he ever became a jersey girl

Now the town of jersey city is quieting down again
Im sitting in a gambling club called the lions den
The tv set been blown up, every bit of it is gone
Ever since the nightly news show that the monkey man was on

I guess Ill to to florida and get myself some sun
There aint no more opportunity here, everythings been done
Sometime I think of tweeter, sometime I think of jan
Sometime I dont think about nothing but the monkey man

But, Blue Velvet and Twin Peaks have to redeem it at least somewhat.

Blue Velvet has some fantastic scenes, but I always thought the ending, that last shot, was a little too on-the-nose and hence a bit lame; simplistic, not deep. In turn, the lameness/obviousness of that last shot somewhat retro-infects, to an extent, my opinion of the film as a whole (despite its several individually brilliant scenes).

For me, Eraserhead remains his finest work - his most inspired, and profound effort.

God, birth, romance, intercourse, pregnancy, child-bearing and rearing, death, and the afterlife. In that order. (God - some sort of demented god or creator, not the I AM/Uncreated Being of the Bible - is the scar-faced man grimly, furiously pulling the lever at the beginning of the film, or at least so I've always thought.)

I have a pet theory, but am not enough of cineaste to know if I'm right. And that is, that Eraserhead had a somewhat revolutionary impact on the use of sound in film -- in particular, in its peculiarly effective and highly original use of ambient background sound to create a mood or effect (I'm thinking of Lynch's use of various sorts of background electrical hums and machinery noises). Certainly, background sound other than music has been used effectively in film almost since the invention of sound (one thinks, offhand, of the scene in the windmill in Foreign Correspondent, which makes such effective use of the sound of creaking wood; or the sound of the rainstorm during and after the battle in Seven Samurai; of course, there are many such examples). But it seems to me that Lynch took it to a different level, and achieved a new kind of effect that no one else ever had before.

There's an analogy, perhaps, to what Griffith did with film editing -- he was not the first to employ such effects - to cut between different perspectives to advance the narrative - but despite the existence of nominal precedents, there's little question that Griffith developed the grammar and language of editing virtually ex nihilo.

I'm not sure I have the critical lingo - well, in fact, I do not - to distinguish what Lynch did from what, say, Kubrick did in 2001, but I think there is a rather significant difference. Kubrick made use of somewhat similar effects with background, ambient types of sound (I'm thinking mainly of the long HAL sequences without dialogue or music), but they were mostly to the end of evoking a futuristic atmosphere. Without question, Kubrick's craftsmanship here was outstanding, and very fresh and creative. But Lynch, in Eraserhead, was doing something quite different -- something truly *new*.

In turn, I think young mainstream Hollywood filmmakers like Lucas (and Ridley Scott in Alien) picked up on what Lynch was doing and ran with it, finally mainstreaming it to the point where such effects are, nowadays, commonplace. But no one used sound quite like Lynch prior to Eraserhead.

David Lynch is vastly over-rated. If you judge directors as great because their work is self-indulgent and nonsensical cultural claptrap, then David Lynch is a great director. I, however, prefer Stanley Kubrick for movies that push the envelope of the absurd.

He's overrated by some, and his work is certainly uneven, but Lynch is a very talented guy (though what I've seen of his more recent stuff seems very self-indulgent, and at times indeed nonsensical).

Kubrick did some great work, although sometimes I think he strained a bit too hard at profundity (Paths of Glory, 2001). Strangelove has some great bits, but it's always struck me that the humor is a little labored in parts.

That's what I thought the first time I saw it. It was just so cheesy. But, having seen the movie a few times, I now "understand" it, and like it. It fits in with the overall film.

Think back to how BV starts: pleasant music, vivid pictures of white picket fences, bright red firetrucks with smiling firemen, spring flowers and green grass, etc.; serene images of a bright sunny day in a simple Smalltown, USA. But the camera fades into the lawn, and you see unsettling images of swarming bugs as ominous music plays, and then a candle goes out. That's how the movie begins, and for the next 2 hours it's nothing but dark, menacing drama.

That ending scene is a return to that peaceful, sappy world, where everything is a just plain good again. It's also a reference to that incredibly hokie dream Laura Dern describes earlier in the film. The animatronic robin is incredibly phony- but, I think that's Lynch's cynical way of implying the phoniness of the "real world" they are living in. Extremely simple, happy people living in small town utopia. But, just around the corner.... evil is lurking. I can almost imagine Lynch laughing at you while that scene plays out. I like it.

That's how I see it anyway. I like Eraserhead, but not as much.
