Recent Trip to Nationals Park
Date: May 08, 2009 09:03AM

Each year my business partner and I take our employees to an afternoon Nationals game. This is something we have done ever since the Nationals' inaugural season at RFK.

This week, we took everyone to the Houston Astros game. I have to say that I was stunned at how much service at Nationals Park has declined since last season.

All of us ended up waiting at least half-an-hour to get a damn hot dog. Virtually none of the vendors were open in the place. They were almost all shuttered. And the few places that were open either didn't offer very much or kept running out of what they had (especially hot dogs). An hour into the game, I went to a beer stand and the guy had run out of change and there was no more beer on tap. I ended up getting a can of beer. I came back about 45 minutes later, and the guy still didn't have change and he was completely out of beer. The entire time I was there, I saw only one vendor in the stands.

While attendance has been down for the Nationals, the stadium was hardly empty. The Post reported that over 19,000 people came to that particular game.

WTF is going on with these people? Are the Lerners doing this? Do the vendors work for the city? You can't even get a fucking hot dog or a beer at this place! Keep in mind, I went to RFK the first year when there was bitching about the food service then, but as bad as RFK was then, it was nothing compared to what I experienced at Nationals Park this week.

Anyone know what's up with this shit?

They are probably having trouble scheduling vendors and open locations based on extremely low turnout. They can only have so many places open and make money on concessions, I'm guessing. So they miss to the upside and downside.

I try to eat/drink before the game. The food prices aren't as bad as FedEx but the drink prices (as they are at FedEx) are outrageous.

I get that. But I don't understand why they are having problems with the beer stands or beer vendors. If you have beer in cans or in a keg, you're not worried about spoilage like you are with food. Plus alcohol is their big money maker.

Dunno. I usually get it from the roving guys in the stands anyway.

Yes, I do bitch a lot. But that's kind of the nature of this forum.

And I will have to disagree about "never" saying anything good about anybody/anything. I believe I have said lots of good things about Barack Obama and have even had kind words for the likes of Gravis and Alias from time to time.

Spunky,

I parked across the street from the Navy Yard when I went to the game. I am almost 100% sure the parking attendant was that devil Mahammed Atta.

First, I never claimed to have any dignity. Second, I'm not sure why you are endeavoring to be lame. And third, I think it is important to remind people on a regular basis that you are a nut.

Regardless of whether or not I am getting "my drink on" at home or at the ballpark, does anyone know off hand how the vendor situation works at Nationals Park? Do the Lerners control that, or the city?

Because of DC laws you're actually allowed to carry up to a sixpack of beer with you into the stadium for personal consumption. It has to be in cans though, no bottles. They don't really advertise that because they lose money at the concessions, but it's perfectly legal to do it.

Where is the link to this city code? Highly suspect, if you ask me. However, please, prove me wrong!

I don't think any of you have one good head between you.

WTL...were you taking your employees to a game for punishment. Most employees I know would prefer money. Perhaps your business sponed the idea for "The Office"?

Inky...I have a msg from you asking me to marry you, man you run hot and cold to fast, moody type aren't you, unless........

My employees are compensated quit well and have better than average vacation packages. We specifically picked an afternoon game during the workday so that employees could skip work instead of doing this on their personal time on the weekend or in the evening, as most companies that do these kinds of things require.

I don't think people realize just how bad it was. We aren't talking about a few slow employees here. We are talking about almost everyone running out of food, change, beer, etc. It was strictly amateur hour.

It's bad enough fans have to suffer through a shitty game while paying out the nose. The least the Lerners and Stan Kasten can do is have enough fucking hot dogs.

Cheers for WTL ... my old employer planned outings like this and I always loved them. I'm sure the benefits you reap from it far exceed the cost.

Bummer about your experience at the stadium. Maybe Camden Yards next year?

We might change it up next year and do something besides a sporting event next year.

Here's an idea---how about a paint ball outing...your employees vs your FFXU pals.

Somebody PLEASE get that on videotape.

Which team would you be on?

I would be a double-agent. I would pretend to be on my employees team and then shoot them all in the back.

I was in the nose bleed section....it was really bad! And it was a terribly played game...at least 5 unearned runs.

Ever had office parties? Play games, catered or covered dish, etc?

How many employees? I believe this forum is up to the challenge of coming up with some original ideas.

You sir, are a monster.

"In 1994, during the campaign of Oliver North for the U.S. Senate, there were several of his supporters seen carrying signs along a Virginia freeway that read, "Homophobia Doesn't Kill." By announcing that belief, they were exposing their ignorance to the world, because homophobia does kill, and it kills with surprising frequency.

There are the obvious murders inspired by hatred. In the U.S., they number in the dozens every year. Abroad, the numbers run to the hundreds to thousands, no one knows the precise number for sure, as in many countries, the deaths of homosexuals are not considered worth recording as a separate category.

But there are other ways in which homophobia kills. There are countless suicides every year by gay men and lesbians, particularly youth, which mental health professionals tell us are not the direct result of the victim's homosexuality, but is actually the result of how the homosexual is treated by society. When one lives with rejection day after day, and society discounts one's value constantly, it is difficult to maintain perspective and realize that the problem is others' perceptions, not one's own, which is why suicide is several times as common among gay men as it is among straight men."
