Had a pretty interesting conversation over lunch and wondered what the folks of FFXU think. Africa is at the heart of the world civilization yet still remains a third world country? How come?

Centuries of colonial rule resulting in ethnic strife, geo-political boundaries that don't make sense, exploitation of natural resources that provided no benefit to local infrastructure, and power vacuums that paved the way for tinpot dictatorships and despotic governments hellbent on making sure they keep themselves in power.

Northern AFrica is fine. Sub-Saharan Africans, however, do not have an intelligent critical mass. WHen evolving, food was not scarce and the weather is great. Just reach up and grab a healthy fruit. They didn't have to deal with the harsh winters and building survival shelters, and the problem solving that went with being a hunter/gather in Asia/China and Europe. This happened over a large time scale, mind yuo. Disease wasn't as big as a problem because many developed sickel-cell animea...a debilitating condition in its own right, but it also counteracts malaria.

In short, it was evolution. In the ways that spotted owls are the same species as Barn Owls or short eared owls, yet each evolved slightly differently according to his/her environment. Slight variations. Our DNA is 99% the same...that's still a 1% variation, and that has a lot to do with tweaking our bodies out over time to deal with the characteristics of our environments through evolution.

Consider this: Sub Saharan AFricans have been in AFrica 3X as long as man has been since he left africa. Yet, they never discovered Madagascar...

And when countries like Portugal, France or GB left at the end of colonialism, they pulled up every bit of infrastructure with them. When France pulled out of Western Africa, they actually took the railroad rails.

Still unbelievable to me that through all the centuries, not one person was able to stand up to lead. An Alexander, Napolean, Attila, etc. No empires/Dynasties through the continent? Australia & South America share the same latitude and are immensely ahead. No viable commodities to trade? No interest in foreign countries to claim the land/resources?? America was discovered looking for a shorter route to the Far East... Why not go south by land or maybe they explored and reported nothing of interest (but in the whole continent??)

Rhodesia/Zimbabwe used to be the bread basket of Africa. I once meet a man from former Rhodesia and had a long talk with him. He had sorrow for the blacks still in that country. The whites or colonials are all gone.

Screw that. BEFORE colonialism things have not changed in thousands of years. Sub-Saharan Africans had all the resources and wildlife at their disposal, and still never contributed anything, ever, to society. The factor is biological [as I noted above]. That is not justification to hate. It's not their fault that they [sub-saharan africans and their genetic descendants] aren't equipped with the mental tools to hack through contemporary society, hence legislation and affirmative action to give them a "handicap" of sorts. However, anything past about 1700 or so it pretty much on the shoulders of the white invaders who fucked that continent so hard, that I don't think they'll ever recover. I've lived in Sub-Saharan Africa for a couple of years, and that is what I believe, based on what I've seen/experienced.

Africans are divided by tribalism, a name that sems to demean them. Other parts of the world are divided by ethnics or religeon. I remembeer watching a movie recently where the colonial power had artificially created a new tribe based on thier own artificial concept, they were racially identical. But it created violent clashes. I think it was the Belgian part of Africa.

Very true Rod. You could call it tribalism or sectarianism. Sectarianism is alive in well. Just look at Europe. Yugoslavia was basically identical to many of the African nations today. An artiface created by outside powers to a big amalgamated unit of groups of people who really don't like each other. As soon as the amalgam crumbled (i.e., communism fell apart), you had Coats going one way, Slovenians going another way, Bosnians going a third way, Kosovars a fourth way, etc.

No different from Africa. You have many artifically drawn nations which throw toghether groups of people who have never gotten along and never will. Think the Hutus and Tutsis.

Another problem is that there is nothing to do in many of these nations and there is very little chance for economic growth. Areas like Western Sahara, Malawi, Togo, the Ivory Coast have few if any natural resources and few if any export prospects for the world market. Subsistence farming and grazing was their past, and is their current situation. Not much can change that, and that status is being undermined by the fact that birth rates in these nations make subsistence farming wholly unable to support a burgeoing population. A poor and hungry population is often a very angry population.

Yeah that's the Congo. King Leupold the II I believe had a conference where they basically decided where all of the boundaries to modern day African countries would be. So this put across a lot of waring factions against one another.

I have seen these schools and neighborhoods, and have had friends live that life. For the most part these areas are left to rot into urban decay a lot of the time.

I'm an old, retired, white guy. Grew up in Fairfax Co when schools were still segregated. I went on to teach in FCPS for a long time. When I first started teacing it was barely 10 years after schools were integrated. The first principal I ever worked for was a black lady, and without quesiton she was the very best adminstrator I ever worked for. She had very high standards for teachers and if you weren't doing your job she dealt with it, regardless of your race. Now, this was a school that had a high %age of low income black and white students. A lot of single parent families.

She stated often that she would not accept a kid's race, financial status, parental status or anything else as a reason for them not to learn. And you know what, the kids in that school made significant progress. She demanded that we test them at the beginning and end of each year to measure their progress. And as a whole the students made great progress and it had nothing to do with race. My point in this whole ramble is that if you expect and demand that teachers and students succeed then for the most part they will. But, and here's the kicker, she expected parents to support the school and she wouldn't accept their excuses for their kids not succeeding.

And, I believe that racism is very much alive and well in American culture. There are definately white's that believe as many of the posters above do, that for some reason blacks are less able to learn (I DO NOT SUBSCRIBE TO THAT THEORY) and there are definately those charlatans that use race to promote themselves or their agendas.

I believe that the whole issue with educaiton is the cultural values that are placed on it. Remove it from black and white. Someone mentioned the success of Asians, it certainly appears that Asians succeed where others do not, in business, educaiton, etc. However, they place a great deal of emphasis and respect for educaiton and hard work in general. As a whole American education falls behind much of the industrialized world, but think about it. What do Americans really think about education?

Extreme poverty perpetuates crime. This phenomena exists in this country, in Eastern European countries that are poor, and even the poor neighborhoods of south east asia.

When you take into account that fact that latinos and blacks live in the poorest areas of the United States. Its not hard to see that more crime would occur. Most of them in prison are there for drug charges, not violent offenses, and when you live in a poor area some of them think selling that stuff is the only way to make a buck.

Shitty situation. Look at Washington state and the meth epidemic that was in poor white communities.

Case and point.

PG County has already had what, 15 homicides this year? So much for the poor are mostly committing non violent drug crimes. At the end of the day, it is the person making the choices that determines where they go in life, NOT race or income. Plenty of poor black kids have gone on to better lives and there are plenty of white spoiled kids who have wasted theirs. you can choose to rise above or choose to blame others.
