It all comes down to the advertisers, the corporations that pay big bucks to advertise during the nightly news. They do not want their products associated with a pathological liar who has trouble separating truth from fantasy and whimsy. Consumers might deduce that since NBC news lies perhaps the product is bogus. They need to bring back guys like Walter Chronkite, Chet Huntley, Howard K. Smith, Morley Safer, Rodger Mudd, David Brinkley, credible guys with balls that really put their asses in danger during WW2, Korea, and Namn.

No doubt all the major networks have had this problem at some point.
It's really more about the reporter making himself an important part of the story.
Bigger than the story in some cases.

Once he steps down, like he said he will, he's history. How the hell is he going to come back after a temp. hiatus? Does he think it will go away and be forgotten in a week and then he may return. change temporary to "hiding", more like the truth.
