WaPo: Bob McDonnell conviction almost certain to be overturned

Looks like Bob McDonnell was railroaded by over-zealous, politically motivated federal prosecutors and will walk. He already has a nice job and the appeals court basically said there are serious questions about how the judge allowed the law to be interpreted (read "twisted"). The judge tried to go with a low-ball sentence hoping McDonnell would accept it and move on. Nope, Bobby's going be free and the judge and prosecutors will be outed as the Holder-lackey toads that they are. They were successful in that they took McDonnell out of the picture for any future national political run, which was their goal all along.
If this doesn't draw Gerry out of his hole, nothing will.

I didn't follow the case too closely.
Can someone tell me what tangible benefit that Johnnie Williams received from McDonnell?
Was it just the association that was supposed to be valued?
That part doesn't make sense to me.

I was thinking the same. He's clearly not been here anonymously these past few days as his style of invective is pretty easy to spot and the fact that he jumps on pretty much anything that offends his liberal agenda sensibilities.

McDonnell also tried to get the state board of health or whatever it's called to endorse them. He even tried to get Steven Spielberg involved when Spielberg was in Richmond to film Lincoln.
The gist of the Post article is that Federal law is vague enough that there is room for McDonnell to appeal, his actions fitting in a grey area.
In other words some shady stuff was going on, but maybe not egregious enough for a conviction. For a smart guy McDonnell acted surprisingly stupid in his relations with Williams.

Which was always the point. Take him out before the elections of 2014 as the insiders in both parties knew Mark Warner was vulnerable. McDonnell pre-trumped-up-charges trial would have beaten Warner by double digits. It's the democrat way. Instead, they just used the old 3rd party "libertarian" candidate again (funded by a key DNC fund raiser) to siphon off enough votes to get Warner the win.
